I am aware of that. I don't subscribe to the conspiracy theories that are popular amongst the parochial right here. I know that much of Saudi Arabia's foreign aid in the Islamic world is benign.

Of course, it also serves the same purpose as any foreign aid does, which is to help build the influence of the donor nation.

There is no evidence that I know of that the Saudis ever plotted with Al Quida or with any other terrorist groups directly. But they did regard the Muhahaadeen as an instrument of an asymetrical foreign policy in the Middle East.

We've discussed the politics of the region many times. Americans have a very hard time separating their world view from the regional balance of power in the Persian Gulf.

I used to work with an engineer who worked there, and he told me quite the opposite.

Of course, his time was about the same time the Mr Bush decided to start his splendid little war in Iraq, and the Bush people were trying to strong arm the Saudis into letting us stage from their country.

That probably has a lot to do with it.

You find, despite the media images, Americans are reasonably well received in most places they visit. Just Anthony Bordane

The Saudis have never been our friends. They have helped the radical islamos spread their influence all over the world, including building terrorist training camps and schools in the USA.

This means that we have barely dodged a giant mussel aimed at our infidel hearts when we developed fracking to recover the massive oil and gas reserves in our shale formations.

Our fracking technology weakens not only Saudi Arabia but Russia as well and under a more conservative political leadership in DC we will grow more and more powerful. The Russians are taking control of the Arctic and will drill it no matter what we do so we are crazy not to get up there and do it the right way.

LOLOL.. The Saudis have been using fracking techniques for decades.

In fact Saudi Aramco has developed a waterless fracking.

Russia had a horrible incident in the arctic 2 years ago.. and it isn't necessary.

Do you know the meaning of "infidel" in Islam?

How can you make such a broad generalization that you can't back up?

Oh because I know thousands of Americans who have lived and worked in Arabia since 1950... and I know so many 3rd generation American expats working in country.

So, Saudis flying planes into our buildings and killing almost 3000 people wasn't a big enough hint for you?

Some of them were Saudis.. but they don't represent all Saudis or all Arabs or even all Muslims.

Ok, so what gives you the right to make a generalized statement on the behalf of a whole country?

Because I know so many Saudis and have interacted with them for many decades.

I was in touch right after 911.. They were as stunned and horrified as we were. Remember when Talal tried to give Bloomberg a check for 10 million? There were 9 other princes ready with equal amounts.

Remember after Katrina when they gave $350 million to the hospitals of NOLA and 30 million to the shrimpers?

The overwhelming majority of people are poor in Saudi Arabia , not a bunch of princes rich off American oil money. You speak for them as well, Margot?

Pakistan's 'ghost schools' threaten next generation

    AFP Dec 13, 2013, 10.37AM IST

CHANCHER REDHAR , Pakistan: In a decrepit white-walled classroom in southern Pakistan, Bushra valiantly struggles to keep discipline as a dozen girls run and scream around her. With no teacher for the past eight months, the 10-year-old has been forced to step in.
"I teach them lessons from the Koran, I teach them Sindhi, I teach them to count one-two, I teach them the alphabet A-B-C-D," said Bushra, wearing a traditional nose stud and a scarf around her head. She says she dreams of becoming a doctor and learning about computers.

But her academic ambitions risk being scuppered after her own teacher fled. Authorities have not appointed a new one, making Bushra's situation typical for a student at one of Pakistan's 7,000 so-called "ghost schools", where no formal classes can be taught.
