Banning an item does not guarantee safety. It's not as if you can banish evil from the world. Someone somewhere may try to hurt you or a love one. I hope not. It's also about freedom. The government should not have the right to determine whether or not someone may own property. Rights are not granted from government. They are inherent, fundamental, and natural. Is there any item you can afford and would like to own, but can't, because your government won't allow it?

That is equally true in the US. Europeans seem to have this foolish belief that people see guns every day in the US and that people are getting shot all over the place.

Most Americans will go their whole life without hearing a single gunshot other than in a shooting range or while hunting.

After all, do you live in constant fear of being the victim of a violent assault? Your odds of being the victim of a violent assault in the UK are higher than an American's odds of being the victim of a firearm (or actually of being a victim of a violent assault). It would be an irrational fear to be afraid of being shot in the US.

 

Perhaps so. But it doesn't alter the fact that the chance of getting shot in the US is way higher than the UK, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and so on.

Human rights are not something to be violated because the government or someone with a statistic deems that the result might be a slightly increased chance of getting hurt.
