The damage to families of these people is enormous and they have a hard time understanding it isn't their fault either.

You can put a physical wall up but the drug smugglers will get around ( or under) it. A dense, electrified maybe in places, drones, guard towers, more patrols, more electronic monitoring devices would be more effective than a stupid unfkexible wall. They are correct.

Some of the comments here reflect a complete lack of understanding.

Since I came back form Iraq, 3 of my buddies have overdosed. Some people here would say it was their own fault and they have no sympathy.

Young people seldom need insurance but at some point they aren't young anymore and life is what it is. Thing is, we all go through the same stages.

I have no sympathy for anybody stupid enough to use drugs. The only exception would be those who became addicted because of prescription pain drugs. Otherwise, stupidity should be painful.

I've read some of the stories, some of these people were on painkillers over prescribed by doctors (after car accidents and other etc), then once addicted switched to heroin. I think there needs to be an overview of the prescription of addictive drugs in general

I do not think a rational person would give up their life unless they are in great distress.

The good news is that in states where cannabis is legal, there has been a significant decrease in ODs. Now, Trump needs to get rid of Sessions and get the DEA to reschedule it.

The Nazis executed people with disabilities before The Holocaust.

In USA, hundreds of thousands of mentally disabled people are in prison. Hundreds of thousands of mentally disabled people are homeless.

Social Darwinism is evil. All people have Fundamental Human Rights -- including people with mental disability and people who can not work. I have Moderate Autism and Moderate Depression.

Lawmakers don't like truth, reality. You know.... ****ing statistics. Actual causation.

Fact - the war on drugs is horse manure. It DOES NOT WORK. We need to decriminalize these medicines.

Education is VERY important. People need to know what drugs are out there, how they work and how dependency works. This whole sheltered mentality and not LEARNING about these things results in a horribly ignorant public.

Most people think that modern medicine is a miracle. That they can go through surgery and be totally PAIN FREE. This is pure ignorance. And compounding this fact is doctors try their best to make people happy, because of the ACA reimbursement being on patient satisfaction. This would make sense if the public was smart. Frankly people are stupid about medical care. Not meant derogatory. They flat don't know anything.

On the flip side, some surgeries you can't do regional anesthesia for. Meaning the ONLY way to obtain pain relief is narcotics. Sorry, it's the best we have. To not give narcs for some of these surgeries would be torture.

We need across the board decriminalization, education, clean needles for those that are addicted (THIS IS A DISEASE) to prevent hep c, hiv, etc.

legalizing weed has been shown, statistically to help. And you don't OD on it. Its helpful for chronic pain also. Again, statistics. But it's illegal....

Tldr people are stupid and morons for thinking cracking down on narcotics is the appropriate thing. People are stupid and morons for not seeking legalization of statistically known alternatives and for not wanting to educate and treat the epidemic for the DISEASE IT IS.

Want to know what the problem is? LOOK IN THE MIRROR

Lots of oblivious people here. The pharmaceutical industry has been marketing and pushing addictive opioids for years. Old pain pill commercials had false statements about how they weren't addictive and they will change your life it was a huge scam and people are dying because if it.

People who are prescribed pain medication are 20x higher to become addicted to heroin. This is not a self control issue.
