That's part of the reason but repubs also support immigration. Business loves immigrants because they mean more customers and cheap labor. The illegal alien lobby pays big bribes to both parties to keep the floodgates open. So Puerto Ricans want to become a state so they can have more political power to get welfare from the white states? The electoral votes won't be enough, they are a small Island and will only get one 1 or 2 electoral votes which isn't enough to influence an election for Democrats.

But on the other hand, maybe they will have more access to the nations safety net like food stamps and federal welfare and social security benefits. Never thought about that, but if they really need it then they should be qualified for it because Puerto Rico is a domain owned by the federal government and most of them pay taxes even though 16 percent don't work.

 

Puerto Ricans are already US citizens but their ability to participate in the government that passes laws is limited without representation in the Senate and limited representation in the House of Representatives and although voters in Puerto Rico have passed a non-binding referendum calling for statehood but it could only be granted by the US Congress and there will be another hurdle to become the 51st US state.

 

They are a US territory as is. They are eligible for any and all programs. However they do not have to pay any income taxes or other taxes because they do not have representation in congress. Admitting them as a state would be an instant monetary benefit. They would essentially begin to pay thier part of their upkeep.
