68 years ago today on June 6, 1944... Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy France in what is commonly known as D-Day.
Commonly known as but wrong. It was Operation Overlord. It took place on a DDay of the 6th of June. I wonder who was the first person to confuse what DDay meant?
It's not wrong...D-Day is a term to denote the day on which a combat attack or operation is to be initiated...there's also H-Hour. The best known "D-Day," here in America... was the Normandy invasion on June 6th, 1944. Hence the anniversary is often referred to as just "D-Day" with no specific reference to the Operation's code name... June 6th, 1944 is still a "D-Day" it's just not the only "D-Day" in military history...just the most known. Referring to the day as "D-day" is not wrong...it was indeed "D-Day" for that operation. The United States Army itself..refers to June 6th, 1944 as "D-Day".... so if you think it's wrong referring to the day as "D-Day"..you might want to take it up with them. http://www.army.mil/d-day/
The US military claims that Yamamoto said the "Sleeping giant" quote even though it's known that he didn't. I take what they put on the internet with a massive grain of salt.
