    Explore Redding

There's a variety of water sports in Redding, from waterskiing, swimming, fishing and sailing in this northeastern California town. When you're ready to dry off, there are also plenty of land-based activities, like hiking in the national forests and parks, following walking trails through the 220-acre arboretum, or spending time exploring two fascinating parks: Shasta State Historic Park and Turtle Bay Exploration Park. At Shasta State, you'll find the ghost town of Shasta City from the Gold Rush days, complete with restored stagecoach, barn and courthouse, with eerie reminders of where prisoners were kept and sometimes hanged. The ever-expanding 300-acre Turtle Bay Park houses the Turtle Bay Museum, with extraordinary hands-on exhibits focusing on the environment and an outstanding collection of American Indian baskets. The kids will love the park's Paul Bunyan's Forest Camp, which includes a playground, logging and ecology exhibits and the popular summer butterfly house, where the fragile winged creatures flit about and alight on welcoming visitors.

Interesting information. I never knew about any of this. I've never been farther north than Sacramento, as far as California is concerned.

Too many outside of California and even many in LA think that California stops at the Bay Area and Sacramento.

What would you like to know? Our unemployment rate is 5.0%. We have more job openings than unemployed and we have a well diversified economy. As to homelessness it is a problem but less of one per capita than most of the rest of California. We are being proactive about it. We have three micro house areas where they also receive services while working toward transition. We have three motels devoted to homeless where job skills are being taught. We have the good news rescue mission. They do great work. We are converting a large building near it to a one stop service area where city and county staff can direct them to help and provide immediate needs like toiletries, jackets, clothing, etc, we have a medical, dental, and mental health services area and a dorm there for those homeless just over 18 w/o job skills to live while learning a trade. Our Hope Center Apartments are almost done. These will allow people who would have become homeless to transition into so they can land on their feet from a lost job and apartment. Also those completing goals in the motels can transition there until they can get approved for a different home. Our police have two CIRT (crisis intervention teams) teams with social workers to meet homeless where they are and offer services. As to crime it is relatively low for a city of 95,000 with about 60,000 more within 15 miles in every direction from it. Our police and sheriff are fully staffed and a closed wing of the jail reopened. We have wiped out the shoplifting spree with a proactive effort and concentrate on the homeless who refuse help and commit crime to support a lifestyle choice. They are like the shoplifters locked up now rather than cited and released. Most of the city is relatively crime free. The park ranger and bicycle teams help a lot in the parks and downtown. The non sworn do great at eradicating graffiti and cleanup after ex homeless camps. For more info:

The last time I was in Redding I was driving through with an old college buddy on our way to his family's cabin near Mt Shasta. I was surprised how many homeless and obviously drugged out people that were there. The Walmart meat section was practically empty (we wanted to pick up steaks to grill for when we got to the cabin) and one of the workers told me people keep stealing them.

It is sad to see it come to that state

How long ago was that? We’ve made progress and are still working on it. It doesn’t help that the state dumps released prisoners and homeless from other locations in the state off here from buses in the middle of the night. We like our city and county. We are the economic, political, cultural, medical, educational hub for a fairly large rural portion of the state. Thus the amount of entertainment, art, music, theater available here.

Redding sounds like a great place. Too bad its still tethered to Sacramento so the state income taxes are oppressive, the gun laws are Draconian, and you'll soon have to buy a car with a gizmo telling Sacramento your every move.

That was a terrible year. The Carr Fire destroyed about 600 homes in Redding and another 600 just west of the city on its way in.

Tethered loosely. Income taxes are bad. Property taxes not so much. We don’t add to sales taxes locally and we use enterprise zones and local rules to make us business friendly. Small individual and family owned local business thrives here. Also our median homes cost last than half the state average median and our incomes are also somewhat lower. That shields most of us from the really high rates. Also because homes and overall cost of living is less here our cost of living poverty rate is among the lowest in the state. So with lower incomes and lower property tax base the state receives relatively little income here while things like roads, education, health cost them as much or more here as anywhere else. We defied the state on lockdowns, on mask mandates, opened our schools in August 2020 in person. As to guns, we are the most armed per capita county in the state, are a 2A sanctuary county, and our local LEO’s are not enforcing obvious 2A infringements. We are standing up to the state on other issues as well. We are remote enough as are some other communities in the eastern foothills and eastern inland empire that is rarely worth it to the state to spend the money it would take to compel local obedience to coastal urban rules they try to make one size fits all. We are populist conservatives and we are as strongly pro Trump as the Bay Area or LA area is pro democrat. The state took away our logging, mills, and natural resources economy and hung us out to dry for about 3 decades before we landed on our feet. Then the 2018 Carr fire, 2019 snowmeggedon and Covid made us stronger and steeled our resolve to make a great place for ourselves. Our downtown revitalization is proof of that.

Barring the state becoming even more fascist thug like than it already is, that’s what I intend to do. The only hope for turning this state around is for some of us on our side to stay and build and show a viable alternative to their coastal urban cesspools full of what Rush Limbaugh referred to as human debris

~ The truth is — as crazy as California politics has become — it is one of the most beautiful places to live on planet earth. There are actually many people here who are " safe and sane" , they just do not run for public office.

True. It’s not easy to be instigated into leaving this state. That they screw it up so bad that we feel compelled to leave parts of it and is truly sad. There are a few isolated safe and sane pockets left here.

It is beautiful and has a great climate which shows how totally screwed up its political leadership is and the pathetic policies they promote that so many would leave here for more sane political and economic opportunities just about anywhere else.

This is the us news board not “current events” or “political opinion” boards. It seemed like a good spot for a different local American news story.
