What the heck is wrong here?
SMH, How do we get the message across to these kids that guns are not toys!
    FFS, Any thoughts?

The right wing is too busy with their gun fetish and desire for power over others, to bother with little details like this.

Too little too late, I would say.

At least we didn’t lose a smart kid.

body armor is rated for different types of energy absorption. For instance, body armor for a 9mm won’t hold up to a .308, body armor for a .308 won’t hold up to a .338 Lapua, body armor for a Lapua won’t hold up to a .50 and so on.

Civilian body armor can usually hold up to a 9mm. I’m wondering what type they had. They may have had plate armor that had a gap one went through, or just cheap crappy armor. Either way these kids knew what they were messing with. Idiocy is often rewarded in life, they happen to not be immune to that concept.

It makes one wonder what they planned to do with the body armor and weapons.

We support our current laws. These kids were not even old enough to have this gun. You can’t buy pistols till 21 years of age so how did they get them?

I suppose that could be considered the bright side of a rather tragic story.
This appears to be accurate information that may shed light on how the body armor failed.
    Thank you.
I guess I am asking if there are any reasonable ways to prevent or reduce these kinds of unnecessary deaths in the future.

Bad parenting. Maybe not "bad", per se, but certainly lacking in some key areas.
My father joined the Chicago Police Department when I was a toddler. He had his weapons in the house and there were no lock boxes. He told us not to touch them and we didn't touch them. However, he was strict about many things so obeying him just happened. We were the only cousins not allowed to go for rides around the neighborhood on our uncle's motorcycle. He said he scraped too many people off the road. So, we didn't do it. We could not get tattoos, earrings, tongue rings or anything else pierced. When your old man is almost 6'4", 240 lbs. of muscle and jogs 50 miles a day, you tend to pay attention.
A thought did occur to me beyond the above. It doesn't make sense to shoot at one another person with body armor.

I would think teenagers might consider putting the armor on an inanimate object to see how it worked out first. So, I hate to be the cynical former cop, but I wonder if that part might be embellished a bit to start some kind of "diminished capacity" defense. It doesn't make sense. Maybe if they were little kids but not teenagers.

I shouldn't have laughed at that, but I laughed at that. Condolences for the families involved and all that but some stuff is absolutely avoidable and this is one of them.
And, body armor isn't cheap. There's more involved here.

Stupid people have a way of finding opportunities to creativity remove themselves from the gene pool. I’d be surprised if these 2 haven’t done something way dumber before landing on this.

Absolutely. My first thought before clicking the thread was "Darwin Award". Completely unavoidable. Those are the worse kinds of tragedies and the survivor is going to be the one hurting for the rest of his life regardless of what happens with the criminal case.

Maybe we should teach the Second Amendment to kindergarten kids up through high school and have the NRA come in and give safety classes. Can you or any other lib give me a reason why they shouldn’t?

If you dig into the story it seems they had shot the same piece of body armor before at a previous time. Then at the time of the accident they fired at least another 5 rounds into it. Some stories say the shooter missed the armor and that is why the death occurred.

For people that don’t know, body armor is a single use item. You NEVER re-use it after it’s taken a round. Many companies will replace armor free of charge that takes a round in the line of duty or in self defense situations.

Education (mainly parenting) is how you stop this kind of thing. Same as other stupid risky behaviors.

When people are not educated they have to learn the hard way. You can learn from other’s mistakes or from your own.

How do we get the message across? Education. Back in the day they would actually have gun safety courses in school or just plain ole hunters clubs. Kids were even allowed to bring guns to school. Funny how there were no mass shootings then. Or if there was they were extremely rare.

But then people started to advocate getting rid of guns and eventually such things were phased out. Now we have more school shootings and mass shootings.....think there might be a connection?

Mine too. 2nd thought was that someone, if not the OP, was going to blame this on those on the right and the 2nd amendment. I was not disappointed. Post 3 and post 16.

Yeah, I think they have some kind of sniping contest to see who can get it in first or something. It is much easier being a parent. I drive my kids crazy because I don't do tantrums and bickering. I don't yell, hit or punish them either. I give them the worst torture on the planet. When they start at each other, I hold up my hand and they each have 60 seconds to name five things they like or love about their sibling. It refocuses the brain on something positive, you can't yell while trying to be nice and they end up remembering that they think the other one is pretty cool to have around.

    Kids - 0 Parent: Score!!!!

I wish I could do that here sometimes. ;-)
