I have mixed feelings about erasing symbols of our country's history, but a few years ago Congress voted to remove several statues from the Capitol's Statuary Hall. It's an attempt to show contempt for, and to erase, the shame of slavery from our history, but overcoming our country's shortcomings is part of what makes America great. Nothing good can come from trying to rewrite our history. Our historical shames have not been unique in world history, they have existed throughout the world since the beginning of time, but most have been corrected by all western countries including our own. Those struggles should not be a permanent stains but rather a source of pride in challenges met.

Symbols of bigotry and racism': House votes to remove Confederate statues from Capitol
    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...ouse-vote-removal-statues-capitol/5485146002/

"These painful symbols of bigotry and racism have no place in our society and certainly should not be enshrined in the United States Capitol. It's past time that we ended the glorification of men who committed treason against the United States in a concerted effort to keep African Americans in chains," Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., said Wednesday. She introduced similar legislation in 2017.

no, it's to erase a symbol that some still worship its history from the Capital and center of towns, long past time to remove them - we will never "forget" the history, no need to glorify it though as that is not what people should remember

Let's remember that every single one of those statues represented a Democrat. What should be erased is the Democratic Party.

Is John Breckinridge's stature still standing. He was Vice President of the United States from 1857 to 1861. He was a Confederate General and was Secretary of War in the Confederate Government at the end. It is my understanding that there is a statue for each of the vice presidents in the hall leading to the Senate chamber.

This is an 1860 presidential campaign piece. Breckinridge pieces are scarce.

I do have a problem with it. Not that I want action taken to stop Congressional decisions. but that I don't want us to whitewash our history which contains both evil and greatness. Learn from history and move on.

It’s funny, no matter how many conversations with Libs I have, I don’t think even a single one has grasped the very simple concept that brothers did not fight brothers, fathers did not fight sons, and friends did not fight friends so that rich landowning aristocrats could keep their property(slaves)

Not a single one seems capable of understanding an issue being any more complicated than the political backdrop under which it took place, nor being able to sympathize or even recognize the decision many had to make between choosing country or choosing state and family.

I’m very sorry ignorance on an issue leads yaall to wage war on inanimate objects that can’t hurt anyone, but that’s your problem. Not mine or anyone else’s.

Isn’t is off how they also comment it’s Democrats that supported slavery — of course showing complete integrity by ignoring that democrats in that time were largely southern religious conservatives — but it’s always Republicans flying the confederate flag and demanding their idols remain up.

It’s fascinating how they convince themselves

On this we agree as long as it is not romanticized.

Libs tell us how important it is for us to teach and never forget history all while they tear down statues, murals and paintings of history. It seems the only statues they approve of are of a career criminal who abused women, tried to pass phony money and loved him some fentanyl.

one can still teach history without worshiping Confederate Statues and flags in the center of towns, in our nations Capitals, State house laws and such

we no more need a statue of Hitler in the Capital to remember history

Nice try. The Democrats are the only party to ever support slavery.

He's carrying a flag. Does he support slavery? Democrats are the only Americans to ever support slavery. You can try desparately to cleanse your souls but it won't work. Democrats own slavery.

What makes you think they were conservatives? Your own definition made up to fit your narrative? What we know for certain is that they were Democrats.

If you have to go back over a millennium to paint your opponents as bad you have already lost. But when your side is currently flying the flags of the idea you are trying to paint others with it becomes almost humorous.

A millennium? Flying a Confederate battle flag doesn't make anyone a supporter of slavery. It's a symbol of regional pride, not slavery, and you would know that if you ever deigned to talk to them. You might also notice that as the South has become more Republican it has become less racist.

Those statutes were put up after the civil war, some in the living memory of civil war veterans. Why, do you think, they did that? Doesn't it strike anyone as odd that after the bloodiest war in US history, there would be statutes put up by the winning side to honor the losers of the conflict?

No, it doesn't. The Union leadership did everything possible to begin patching the country back together after the war. includng being magnimous in victory. They were all brothers, all Americans.

I grew up in the Deep South and live in Appalachia — I know what it means. They are flying the flag of slavery — I would love to hear you justify a Nazi flag as being “regional pride”. Lol — you people.

I have heard some doozies here but that is top of the list.
