Well, there are sure to be bots that do little more than gather data. But, the actual attempts at AI are doing way more than that. They are figuring out strategies that they then then apply.
By processing whatever data they have gathered based on how the software was designed. They are computers. They aren't sentient.
I'm fairly familiar with computers. I have been using them since the 1980's. I am a certified network engineer and I have owned and operated a computer company. I have been in senior management in other peoples' computer companies as well. I'm still involved. I make my living doing E-commerce on a web site of my own construction. It is possible to do harm with computers but not because computers are intelligent. It is because they are programmed to do harm. The people who are fear mongering for a time out are those who are behind the technology and want to catch up. If you want something to fear let me suggest China and the U.S. federal government.
This isn't about sentients. The software is designed to learn, to create strategy, etc. It's ability to do so is beyond what humans can accomplish in many domains.
I'm not suggesting fear. But, there is a serious need for care. An AI in the relatively near future absolutely could do serious harm without their being any intent by any human. AIs aren't going to recognize harm unless carefully indicated or they must be limited in access in serious ways.
actually it is a type of learning, they do give it rules, it's not allowed to say anything it wants, but it kinda takes on a life of it's own and it's only gonna get better and better, once it starts designing itself, that is when the technology will grow crazy fast

There are already cures for cancer. Big pharma suppresses that knowledge, so it's not a matter of AI discovering a cure.
You didn't also say you're a little behind the times. These soccer playing robots weren't programmed by humans — they learned the game themselves after only being instructed to score goals. From there the AI program went about devouring motion capture technology and testing different moves for about two weeks. Through this system of trial and error, the robots just got better and better with more practice. The development of their own game has eerily mirrored soccer history with an evolution in passing followed by the birth of tactics. The robots are inverting the pyramid as we speak.
How can this be misread? If AI did find the cure for specific cancers it would still be suppressed by big pharma. Because big pharma is a multi-billion dollar industry that lives off the lives of sick people. Where would they be if everyone was healthy, that their medicines cured everyone? They'd no longer be that multi-billion dollar industry. Their meds only treat symptoms and do not address the root cause if it can't be cut out of the body. Scientists cure cancer, but no one takes notice Why isn't big pharma interested? Because it cures people.
This doesn't make any sense. There are LOTS of partial cures for cancer that pharma manufactures, tests and distributes. Why would they NOT do that? Curing cancer patients doesn't mean that others won't contract cancer. Your comment about symptoms is false. It IS true that there are diseases for which there is no total cure, but where the person can be treated such that they live reasonable lives with the cure.
"Partial" is not curing. If it were an effective cure, then the patient would not get cancer again. Yet many do. Money. Why cure everyone, big pharma would go broke. Ever consider what the preservatives, artificial colourings, flavours, and modified processed sugars in our food do to our bodies? Eat enough of that crap and yes, you'll have a good chance you'll be a cancer patient. Is it? Look at all the pain medications such as paracetamol and Ibuprofen. What do they do for your headache? They do relieve the pain but does that cure the root cause, what if you continue to get the headaches chugging on those meds won't cure the headaches if it's something chronic. Or what about statin drugs, they're really nasty piece of work. Take them to lower your cholesterol after you've suffered a stroke. The adult human body makes 1000mg of cholesterol per day and these statin drugs mess around with the following; Lowering cholesterol in the body at the cost of what? So you can become a patient with another variety of illnesses. Also, vitamin supplements are BS too. As they are synthetic versions that mess with the body. It would be amazing if AI could turn big pharma around, rather than finding cures.
So is AI going to suppress itself? Or is any entity other than big pharma not able to go passed the big pharma suppression?
I haven't seen ANYONE propose that as a definition of "cure". It doesn't make any sense. Big pharma has been doing an unbelievably GREAT job for us. That's not the problem with drugs and other pharmaceuticals. The problem comes in the form of LUDICROUS prices for stuff we absolutely need. Pharma is not responsible for food coloring, vitamins, etc. Pharma is also not responsible for homeopathy, which is a gigantic business with no testing for safety or efficacy.
