As we all see, today in Western countries power is in the hands of the fascists. Children and grandchildren of those who sent millions of innocent people to the gas chambers. Those who put inhuman experiments on children. Those who killed people only for their nationalities or skin color.
Sadists and maniacs, admirers of Hitler, now are in power in the countries of the West.
It's no surprise that the world is on the verge of a global war.

And a GRANDfather is relevant, HOW? I think of the former Secretary of State Madeline Albright, who didn't even know she had Jewish roots.
WWII is long gone and many people and many governments did despicable things. Some guilty Nazis were taken in as free men to the US to help us in the cold war - past sins forgiven.
How does this reflect on a person who had no input to her GRANDfather's actions?

Anyone can accuse someone who is from Germany or other European countries of having a Nazi connection. Hell I had a guy scream at me and claim that I was Nazi who killed Jews. I was born after WWII so go figure.

The problem with this woman - foreign minister - is not that her grandfather was a Nazi collaborator and wrote enthusiastic articles about Adolf Hitler and supported Holocaust. The problem is that she lied about him. She told people her grandfather was an innocent victim of Russian barbarians but he wasn't. He was Nazi accomplice and if, instead of getting Canadian visa, he got 10 years of Gulag - that would be ****ing right.

 

Shared political values, I suppose. The same as her Nazi granddad, she hates Russians and supports Ukrainian neo-nazis.

Soooo...she's supposed to be guilty of his crimes then? So she stretched it a bit? All politicians "stretch" it a bit, it's a prerequisite in politics if you didn't know. I wrote she is a lier - because she lied about the dark past of her family.

She blames Hitler and Stalin for her granddad had to leave Ukraine, meanwhile he moved to Krakow absolutely freely to serve Hitler.

She also emphasizes everywhere her Ukrainian routs, her links to Ukrainian-Canadian community, to Ukrainian politics. I didn't say she's gulty, I said she has links to Nazi collaborators what is pure truth.

 

I would lie about it too. I'm almost positive that there are Nazi ties on my fathers side of my family. If I was running for public office I sure as hell wouldnt be putting that out there though. Instead I would be highlighting the fact that my grandfather was a German linguist and interrogator from '44 until '48.

I see the point, but lots of politicians lie, just like another MP in her party Maryam Munsoor, or something like it, about her actual Iranian roots, where her mother claimed to be Afghani. Whether this Freeland lied or no...doesn't mean she's somehow beholden to the misgivings of the past.

By the way, one guy has found out the newspaper Krakivski Visti (News of Krakow) in archives (grandfather of the minister was this newspaper's editor). This Ukrainian-language newspaper on September 22, 1941 issued an article about newly organized police in Kiev: "Step by step they have solved all problems on organizing Ukrainian police. This work demanded a lot of time, power and determination."

To make it clear, exactly this police several days later started to execute Jews in Babi Yar.

WWII was a really complicated affair in the Ukraine. It was three-cornered, the Germans vs the Soviets vs the Ukrainian partisans and the Ukrainians didn't really stop until 1952. Lots of shifting loyalties I suppose and that was probably one reason the woman came here. Whatever, SHE wasn't a Nazi and it's terribly unfair to castigate somebody over what their ancestors did. Or lying about it. I don't bring up that my family were once one of the biggest slaveholders in my state and actually famous for "breeding" quality human stock, around my Afro-American friends either
