Amazon pulls out of plan to build New York City headquarters after backlash

NYC thanks mainly to Cortez screws the pooch as Amazon says No Thanks we are are not building in NY

Amazon will build it's second HQ in Nashville Tenn. This is a better fit with much lower taxes for workers who don't complain like AOC and her socialist followers. It's also close to FedEx HQ.

In addition to the 25,000 jobs, Amazon would've brought $2.5 billion in Amazon investment and eventually 8 million square feet of office space to Long Island City as part of its investment announced last November. The Seattle-based company said it would have generated "incremental tax revenue of more than $10 billion over the next 20 years as a result of Amazon’s investment and job creation."

funny amazon mentions tennessee, the one place with weak commitment to privacy policies on the internet, its why more n more website owners and advert agencies are based there... using it as corporate address...

It is pretty difficult to regulate privacy issues on the state level. States can sue but I'm not sure what good that does.

This decision to not locate in Long Island City is a huge topic for debate today on CNBC.AOC was only one of many New York politicians who were against Amazon relocating and receiving $3 billion in taxpayer subsidy.Following on the news that the fourth quarter was the biggest drop in retail sales in years and the auto loans delinquencies at an all time high,it may have been a good decision for NYC.

This is why the left has tried so hard to take over at the federal level as well as the courts.

In order for their Marxist policies to work, they have to remove the ability of people to run from it.

I agree with you on this. These mega facilities come with mega taxpayer subsidies. I don't think they work out as well as promised in the long run for the people in the community. Good ribbon cutting opportunity for the politicians is all. The public should not be subsidizing a company as wealthy as Amazon. Ditto for Foxconn et al.

I said 70% of NY Politian's were in favor. They didn't cave exactly. Amazon made a wise decision to stay the heck out of anywhere AOC and the socialists are.

It is no different than the CA rail boondoggle. The local politicians and land owners there were jacking up the prices at the proposed site for the land to extreme prices even for over priced NYC. It was a good business decision for Amazon to stay out of NY. NY has gone from a bad place to do business to terrible. The average wage for employees at the Amazon HQ was to be over $150K per year. Not enough to get by on in NYC.

Which means that 30% were opposed.

Whether this was a good thing is only going to bare out over time.

I appreciate the middle finger being given to them, which is my sentiment towards this segment of my fellow Americans. Increasingly, they expect the many to pay for the few.

Have you bothered to read any of the news? They didn't want to deal with AOC or her kind. Plain and simple.

Some other state will benefit from 25,000 new jobs, more taxpayers, all the support businesses that will spring up, less crime and less burden & expense on their social services.

I don't disagree. But whether or not this move away will have been a beneficial move or not for that area will remain to be seen. AOC and those against did have some valid concerns considering all the subsidies and tax breaks being handed to them. I doubt they wanted another Foxconn mess.

i'm actually glad, because amazon doesnt pay utility bills (aka electric) rather the state gets the utilities to 'work' that cost into the average ratepayer bill for electric...
amazon is a bad deal for residents everywhere... this has been brought to light in these forums, search it if you care...

    amazon sux...

And of course we can all see how well the GOP controlled state of Wisconsin at the time, is fairing with their huge subsidies of FOXCONN, and now the 13,000 jobs promised are fading into the sunset. If any jobs ever materialize the cost per job to taxpayers will be astronomical.

They will indeed. Calling NY "Progressive" is an oxymoron.
Here is some further news: https://www.foxnews.com/tech/cuomo-slams-ocasio-cortez-others-as-amazon-ditches-new-york

When liberal Governor Andrew Cuomo is personally slamming Cortez for blowing the deal it is time he and other dems recon with the moron.

Do you really believe a bartender knows what's in anyone's best interests? I can't wait for her to call for more job creation. BTW, in the NYC area, how many homeless people are there who could use a job?

Well they were looking for an educated work force and a locale where people would want to live, especially the versified young people they would like to attract, did you think they were going to find them in Tennessee or Texas?

Actually, It is my understanding that they have not change plans to build in VA. They need to be close to DC since they have a lot of government contracts related to their cloud business. They could expand their plans there. There are more than enough highly educated people in VA and around DC.

The plan for TN is for another distribution center. It may be a large one but won't be a second HQ.

Perhaps, but it is already large enough, and DC/VA doesn't compare to NYC for young educated people nor hold the same degree of attraction for those same people NYC possesses

amazon is bad business for local residents, i'm glad those f*ckers aint here... bezo aint hiring the homeless , so that comment is rediculous...

ny has been giving big biz 10-30 year tax breaks, so tell me how that helps the locals... it dont, because the local expenses rise , completely offsetting new job incomes...

tennessee's rednecks can wallow in the false hope of amazon...

Yeah, and Liberal Mayor Bill De Blasio seems to think otherwise

    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/14/nyregion/amazon-hq2-queens.html

And the more I read about this, I'm not sure Amazon was a very good partner in this. They didn't seem interested in making any compromises with some of the concerns many had which is always problematic (our way or the highway never creates goodwill)
