"My [insert relative title] came to this country with absolutely nothing but the clothes on his/her back and through hard work, determination, and above all, absolutely NO help whatsoever from anyone they became a multi-trillionaire. And if he/she can do it, then anyone can and if they don't, well it just means they didn't work hard enough."

This, or a similar story is often related by Regressives to justify policies that promote social darwinism. That's fair. So I issue a challenge: let's play a little game.

I am a new immigrant to the United States, I've used all my money to buy a plane ticket and complete the necessary process to come to this country legally and thus have literally the clothes on my back and nothing else. I have no family in this country. I can't read or write. I don't even know where my next meal is coming from. But it doesn't matter, does it. Because I have a dream and a faith in America - the land of opportunity. The beginning of my life in America is perfect for the American Dream. I've just walked off the plane. Now what?

This is not the 1800's anymore when any immigrant could walk into a factory and start working. Today you need a bit more than that before you come here. Learn the language, apply for the proper credentials such as ss and dl and have some sort of plan such as cleaning a hotel for a free room.

Hard work will get you where you need to go but stupidity will not.

You're screwed, not as screwed as you would be in any other country if you had no resources and couldn't read or write. Still you find others of your language and ethnic background and you find a crappy job. That crappy job and the life you are able to make with it will very likely already be better then the life you left.

From there you improve your situation, learn the language, learn a more marketable skill, etc.

So what's the point of this rant of yours?

Quit making excuses. You could never pull yourself up by your own bootstraps. You would just stand there and feel sorry for yourself.

Name one country where you can get off a plane, walk across the street and get a job.

Well never mind then, clearly you have no point and are just a whiney pessimist.

    None with that attitude.

Can't tell you how many immigrants that own businesses that I know of. Determination and work is what it takes and the American dream is achievable. Only the left will tell you that it is a falsehood.

If you followed our immigration laws and the executive administration at the time was following the Constitution and our immigration laws, who was your sponsor ?

I would say you could quickly find a bridge to hide under, popping out to demand a toll as people approached to cross. I mean given your demonstrated PF skillset, anyway.

Perhaps I should be more clear: one of the above comments was that you needed "a bit more" to succede , another was "Your screwed." My answer of "Stop making excuses. You would never be able to pull yourself up by your own boot straps. You would just stand there feeling sorry for yourself. What job could I get?" was meant as telling THEM that was no way to think, you don't need anything or anybody else to success and if THEY were in the position of the immigrant in the example THEY would just stand there feeling sorry for themselves. Me, I would never say it couldn't be done. I am here to work. Now what job can I get?

Don't blame conservatives for the fact that progressives are regulating jobs out of existence.

GREAT! That gives me hope! I want to be a business owner too! I am at the airport...what's the first thing I need to do to accomplish that goal?

That comes from within. If you don't have the drive, you won't have the success.

No where, since progressive bureaucrats are getting paid to sit at a desk and continuously write new regulations.

I have the drive. I am asking you for advice. Where do I go to get a job...any job. Doesn't matter.

Perhaps I need to be more reductionist: if you were to meet an immigrant at the airport in this situation who wanted to achieve the american dream what advice would you give him or her?
I will make it even easier: complete the following sentence "Now that you're in America the very, very first thing you need to do right this very minute is..…"

No one can tell you what to do. If you don't already know, then you are just going to spin your wheels waiting for someone to do it for you.

You are required to first pay all your back taxes and then pack your bags and get on the boat and go back home.

There are 21 different immigration visas, which one were you issued or awarded ?

Now some immigration visas are unconstitutional and nothing more than treason, where the executive branch of government ignored what the purpose of immigration laws are for and just said (*)(*)(*)(*) the Constitution and (*)(*)(*)(*) Congress, (*)(*)(*)(*) hard working tax paying Americans, we will create our own immigration visas to further a leftist political agenda, for example the DV immigration visa.

OK, I need to be even more reductionist: What would you do?

Not show up without a plan.

This is the dumbest thread I've replied to yet, I'm out.

Go to the nearest Church and/or homeless shelter

I have to wonder how they've let you in when you can't even speak English, but I am assuming you have entered legally. If you have not your coyote probably already has work lined up for you. He'll take most of your pay, but that's the deal

And , yes, you're right. No one ever came to this country and even survived without a good deal of help from someone along the way, but no one ever does anyway, conservative bloviating notwithstanding. The American Dream just says that you CAN come here and prosper, not that you will or that it will be easy.

Exactly. If are illiterate, do not speak a single word of English, do not know anyone and have no plan, you should expect a life of poverty.

Pile yourself into a house with 10 other Mexicans to save costs lol

Alot of the immigrants around here are specialized in construction. I have no idea what else they do. For whatever reason, Indians run motels or convenience stores. I would suppose you would work odd jobs that you're skilled at, live in large groups, save cash and acquire capital. Another thing people don't realize is lots of Mexicans come here, save money, then go home to retire since Mexico is cheap compared to here. I'm actually at the hospital with my wife right now and 4/5 docs I've run into are obviously immigrants. Have no idea if they're eligible for student aid or what.
