You equate 9 million rounds of ammo to a 'war' in a country with ~60 million people. And I'm not questioning that btw, sounds like a war to me too. In the US, we produce about 9 Billion rounds per year (the bulk of it for sale in the civilian market) and there's no way to tell how much of it is used and how much of it is stored away for a rainy day.

I just gotta wonder how different things would be for the people of SA right now if they'd had more of a culture of armed self defense, similar to that of us 'crazy gun-nut' Americans.

Yes ordinary citizens absolutely need weapons for self defense.

Re the numbers - bear in mind the 9 million is just stolen number, not legally purchased. If you do the calculations on the number of deaths 59 per day for 25 years that's half a mil (if you assume one bullet cause of death), now perhaps double that for deaths and times ten for missed you could guesstimate 10 million used in the last 25 years...this just for murders. Does not include ammo used in sport, shooting clubs, training, private security, gang wars, farm attacks no deaths, cash in transit heists, carjacking etc etc.... so actual figure in circulation would be much higher.

Btw I also forgot to mention the taxi association that engages in territory wars

Wynand de Toit from Suidlanders discuss briefly some of the analysis after the violent riots and looting.

Final count of ammo stolen 1.9 million
Mostly dry provisions targeted, in favour of things like coke and other fast movers on the black market, which points to someone making preparations for war.

Also last week on the Rand (Joburg area) 20 armed men raided a warehouse, confiscated cellphones and tossed it in a box with a jammer. Then 14 interlink trailers with their own drivers and forklift drivers showed up and emptied the warehouse of R11 million of dry provisions. Not one pallet contained chocolates or soft drinks that would have moved quickly on the black market.

he says " only an army hoard dry provisions"

There's also been cyber attacks on South Africa's harbours and the backlog on offloading vessels so bad that vessels are now not docking at South African ports anymore. There will soon be a massive shortage on luxury items and foods.

There is a systematic, coordinated attack on the South African economy, with the goal to topple the country into crises with a new government at the end of it. He also says the planning have been that good there can be no other outcome than a planned chaos. Whites will become targets as a recent report showed that most of the people in the townships said, if there are no food after the looting they will go to the white people's homes.

Video is in Afrikaans however above translates most of pertinent information
