I like that you are looking to improve the forum. We already get a notification if someone quotes or likes a post of ours is there anyway to get a notification if a mod looks at a report? I know there is a ton of posts and a ton of modding to do but it seems like sometimes the smallest things get people kicked from a thread or banned but someone threating to kill someone ( an actual event here) took days to get a response. It would help to know if when we report something it was atleast looked at.

I have moderated several forums in my life. So here are my thoughts.
    1. Do not have an open Feedback forum, unless it is a forum for questions about the site. Anything more then that is just going to be nightmare.
    2. The personal attacks on this board is pretty bad. I have always found that if I report a post that singles out and individual poster (ex Winter Bear) versus a group (ex Conservatives), the former almost always gets deleted where the later does not. Maybe just explain that in Rules for this site.
    3. Acknowledging reported posts is a good idea. Just a simple "we received your report, we will look at the post as soon as we can--- Thanks the Mods."
    4. Do not have moderators who mod a forum post in the same forum. It gives the appearance of a
    conflict of interest.

    Those are my thoughts. :)

    What!?

It's way better than just letting the idiots run rampant in threads...

I understand that you are trying to maintain control, but pulling the trigger at the least little bit of banter will drive people to other forums. IMHO some mod actions lately have been ridiculous.

And by "idiots" you mean those who disagree with your opinions? There is some obvious bias playing into these decisions!

Personally speaking here, but if a person can not communicate without making it personal, then the mods should show them to the door. Like you say, there are plenty of other forums....

Everyone, including you, has engaged in some banter here. I understand outright personal attacks and insults are not tolerated, but the Mods have gone WAY farther than that here lately. I have been posting here for years and have never seen the ridiculous post deletes and bans I have seen in the past two weeks.

That's probably because the amount of off-topic posts and personal attacks/insults are WAY higher than they used to be on this forum...

    That is HIGHLY unlikely.
It is politics right? Maybe you haven't noticed how divided our nation is right now.
If anyone has a political opinion strong enough to post about, they will be passionate about it right? Common sense right?
So if a little banter is included it should be OK and expected.

The amount of those types of posts is definitely higher on here than it used to be...

If you've been posting for years, then, you know that to be a fact...

And, if any particular poster can't adhere to the TOS, then, they should expect their posts to be deleted, etc...

I can see all these complaints are falling on deaf ears, that is unfortunate. We all just want this site to be better. Ghestapo moderators are NOT the way to go!

    Nice hyperbole...

The mods are Gestapo for insisting that folks adhere to the TOS?

    Hilarious...

I'm appreciating some of the ideas here, and at least one or two of them are definitely going into place within a week or so. I talked to the owner late last night and again this morning about being more communicative in response to member-reported posts. I feel like a brick for not realizing how put off some people are by that; in retrospect, yeah, it should be obvious. I just never really thought of it, and I can probably speak for the mods as well, or one of them would have brought it up. We heard that one, and we're going to act on it.

As for the banter, hey - we're all for it. This place should be fun. I love to banter myself. I think every moderator on our current staff has a very good "ear" for differentiating between banter and genuine personal remarks. If any of them have any question, they're not shy about asking the others for help - one of them just posted something in the Staff forum the other day saying, "hey, I never heard this expression before - do you guys think it's a figure of speech, or is it a serious remark?"

These people are serious about getting it right, and being extremely fair to the users. The general rule of thumb is (to steal an expression from baseball) the tie goes to the runner - that is, when there's a question of intent, the poster gets the benefit of the doubt, context permitting. My feeling is, if we screw up and let someone off easy, it'll even out later. Someone who makes it a habit to insult others will pop up again sooner than later, and next time, we won't be so inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt. Someone who has multiple infractions for similar offenses - even multiple pages of infractions - we're usually not going to be so quick to believe, but we do try to evaluate every potential infraction on a case by case basis.

If anyone feels they've been unfairly infracted for a remark that they meant in jest, please PM me and I'll look at it. I just reversed an infraction on a guy the other day for something similar. He said something pretty nasty, but swore he was just kidding. I'm not sure I believed him, but he seemed sincere, and if I'm wrong, we'll figure him out eventually. If someone keeps getting infractions for personal attacks, and they were really just kidding, they might want to reflect upon what it is in their posting style that makes their remarks come across that way. We'll be glad to discuss it with them.

I think we should also address continue lying to slander or skew threads. It has really hurt a few threads because members come in, make WILD claims, and when asked for proof hide behind mods. That's not how any debate site should work and those post should be viewed as trolling.

"It's my ball and I say that whatever kind of hit I make, it counts as a home run. Also, every time I pitch a strike, it's a strikeout." The problem is that practically all these people with the money to start and advertise message boards have the same attitude. That's why, "You can always go somewhere else" is one of their most vicious and deceptive lies.

Run away and tell Mommy instead of fighting back against whoever insults you. There are also people who have no genuine self-identity, so if you insult one of their gurus or favorite cults, they take it personal. But most provocative of all are people who sincerely believe they are not being insulting because they are only repeating things authority figures have preached to them. Too many lies are taken for granted, such as that scientists know more when they really only know more about what seems to prove their pre-conceived point. Also, they don't have very high IQs, so a smarter person can confute them with less knowledge and more understanding.

I agree with this. Not only will others see the so called offending post and can discern for themselves if thread or forum ban is or was necessary or possibly not fair or honest and represents a vendetta against certain posters, they will see what is permissible and what isn't. Also many times when posts are deleted and infractions issued the poster has no idea what post it was or why and others don't either.

Didn't the thread ban state a reason such as personal insult in place of the deleted post? Mine did, but believe me I had to look for it for 20 minutes in a thread 30+ pages long. I had no idea what post in a long thread. That does need to be changed.

We give a warning in the thread itself, and then announce it in the title of the same thread as well as the OP, giving the link.

That's certainly something that can be addressed. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
