I am a life long hunter and recreational shooter at both rifle targets and shotgun traps and grew up in western Colorado within a farming and ranching community. I clearly desire to protect my rights to acquire and posses arms for recreational, self-defense and property protection (including livestock and pets) purposes But assault type weapons with magazines greater than a 5 round capacity are not needed for these purposes. Such weapons are an affront to my dignity, sense of esthetics and well-being and I am greatly offended by the users of these assault type weapons. I have several times been disturbed at the midnight hour in hunting camps by possibly alcohol challenged hunters in nearby campsites discharging semi-automatic firearms with high capacity magazines. And I am greatly offended when I come across such hunters with those type weapons in the field. I do agree and it is important to note that a ban on such weapons will do little to reduce or eliminate our culture of violence. Other strong measures including education, mental health care and programs promoting ethical and moral individual actions are greatly need. But there is no reason to not and many persuasive reasons to ban assault type weapons and high capacity (5+) magazines.

I believe the difference is the number of rounds it can fire without reloading.

For sport hunting, that is an important difference.

From the point of view of camping next to some idiot who likes to shoot round after round in the middle of the night, it's an important difference, even though the first round is likely to bring you out of a sound sleep anyway.

Now that we're on the subject of gun control (once again), let me give you this notification, just in case the subject ever comes up:

Oh, yes, and high capacity magazines also waste a lot of rounds.

I have found AR owners fall into two categories of people
    1. Former military who enjoy the AR because it is similar to the M16. That was why I bought mine back in the day.
    2. Wannabees who have never served but want an AR because it is cool.

The first category I don't have a problem with. The second category disturb me since they want a weapon because it brings out some wannabe killer instinct.

Lastly the OP makes a good point why booze and weapons don't mix.

As long as they are legal, it shouldn't be a problem. It's their choice.
It would be kind of like me having a double barrel or O/U shotgun and not liking that another guy has a semi-auto with six shots.

You do what you do and I'll do what I do.....
Are you sure five rounds will always be enough?

The booze should never come out until after firearms are put away, not before.....

And then you have us older crowd that got curious when they were talking about banning them.
I never had an interest until my wife asked me if there was anything I wanted to get before they ban it.
They are just plain fun to shoot.

You must be an old-timer that likes old stuff.

You should also be offended by someone who carries an six shooter pistol from the 1800's as they are over the 5 shot limit.

Same for any rancher who carries a 30-30 lever gun that usually carries 7 shots in a tubular magazine. I don't know how you feel about fixed magazine weapons like a 100 year old British SMLE, it is bolt action, but has a 10 round capacity---ban them as well.

I don't think you'll change anyone's thinking in this forum---but your best bet is to let your local law enforcement officers, like the sheriff, know that the high capacity handgus he and every other cop uses nationwide offront your dignity, and are not needed to take down violent criminals who have the poor taste to arm themselves with modern weapons. As you think you know, no person can take more than 5 bullets before they drop dead. Just like the Bank of America robbers in the1997 North Hollywood Shootout. Tell them, "Since high capacity weapons are not needed for me and my situation, you don't need them either---because I know better than you. Thank you."

Eroneous! A gun in the AR platform is a great home defense weapon. They are used in hunting as well as competitions.
