First of all, thanks for accepting my request to join this group :)

Hi! I'm Sepha, a 23 year old law student from The Phililppines.

A little about me. I used to not care about politics. I used to think there was no hope for my country so what was the point of politics- I may as well just sit back with a nice cup of coffee and watch the world burn. I am quite the optimist, as you can probably tell.

But recent events in my country and in the world in genral have lead me to evaluate my lukewarmness and my beliefs. I come from a very conservative family and went to a conservative highschool and a Catholic university. So learning about different ways of thinking (brought about by procrastinating schoolwork to read political articles) made me realize that a big part of the problem is the lack of dialogue.

Now I'm a moderate leaning towards the right. But I would like to learn more about different ideologies and discourse upon them. I do believe in democracy after all, and I think one of the cornerstones of democracy is having a community with various ideas and beliefs yet united by a common love of freedom and understanding.

Okay, enough with the sappy autobiography.

Can't wait to learn from all of you! :)

You seem a good addition to this community, I recommend you spend some time reading various threads to figure out the many members we have with the ability and desire to type with competence and pleasantry, as well as those of an opposite tendency. Have Fun:juggle:

    Welcome!

Like your nation, America also has many problems with violent Leftists, narcotics and gangs---but not so many volcanoes.

I do think a heavy hand is needed with the drug trade, and your President appears to be making some progress.

    Thank you for your welcome!

Ah, but at what cost? At the cost of innocent lives being slaughtered as collateral damage? I cannot judge him, as things do, I suppose, get accomplished, but as a law student taught to admire the law, I am disheartened by the severe lack of due process that it comes with and the lives of innocent Filipino citizens that are taken.

True, and not so many earthquakes and I believe :p

As I try to hold all people accountable to the same standards of moral behavior and lawful conduct around the world----

I hardly believe the many communities that allow narcotics gangs and Communist insurgents to kill, kidnap and hook people on deadly narcotics should be shown much mercy.

I would hope the justice system in the Phillipines does not say, "It's okay for you to kidnap tourists and missionaries because you are poor, because you are from this ethnic group or this religion."

It's just that since there is no due process and therefor no trial or hearing, there are Filipinos who are not drug addicts or are in any way related to the drug or criminal world are murdered and are touted as 'collateral' damage. We have in our country what we call extra-judicial killings.

Do not worry, our justice system does not say that :)

Welcome. Hope you enjoy your time here. I hope you like arguing because there is a whole lot of THAT going on these boards, but you can learn a little about different viewpoints at least. :)

    Welcome to Political Forum, Sepha.

Pure democracy is a dangerous proposition. The United States remains a great nation because of our U.S. Constitution.

    Hi Sepha.
Hope you flex your academia here.
I have one sincere question for you.
Why is it the Philippines is like the Poland of Asia? ref./Search: Polish or Polak jokes.
I mean y'got Japan, China, Korea and then you have the Philippines like the learning disabled family member. (In the old days we could say, "retarded", try again ret*rd*d)
So I sincerely ask you, why has the Philippines economy living standards, academia, never come near its' neighbors? I mean you had all the advantages of Spanish and American benevolent, if not charitable influence & management for so many decades. Japan only needed one decade after World War 2 in order to, "get it".

    Thank you.

Oh and welcome. It is the :flagus: way to encourage one to embiggen themselves.

I thought embiggen was a creation of the Simpsons.
The link taught me more better.

    It had some good points.
Imagine being able to Ostrasize Hillary?
    https://www.britannica.com/topic/ostracism
Ostracism, political practice in ancient Athens whereby a prominent citizen who threatened the stability of the state could be banished without bringing any charge against him. (A similar device existed at various times in Argos, Miletus, Syracuse, and Megara.) At a fixed meeting in midwinter, the people decided, without debate, whether they would hold a vote on ostracism (ostrakophoria) some weeks later.

That is true! But then again, I do not know of any country that still uses a pure democracy. I know you guys have an indirect democracy.

And yes, your constitution does touch on free speech, which is something I admire about it :)

Hi! That's a good question. The difference between the Philippines and the countries of Japan, China, and Korea lies in the circumstances. Those three countries you mentioned were not colonized for three hundred years by bigots who treated them like trash. Now, I'm not saying the Spanish now are bigots. They were back then, but me, and my people have forgiven them entirely and moved on (unlike some political movements in the States that refuse to just get on with their lives and continue to hold Caucasians accountable for crimes they did in the past. I'm not mentioning any names) The Philippines was for three hundred years under Spain, a country which, pardon my French, treated us like s@#$. Those were not three hundred years of heaven. Those were three hundred years of oppression, where our culture was forcibly taken away from us and we were stripped of our dignity and treated as second class citizens (well, a second class citizen is too much of a good thing for us back then) IN OUR OWN LAND. I'm sorry, but being under the Spaniards WAS NOT an advantage. Can you name me one country that was once under Spain that is now a world power? Anyway, to reiterate. That's three hundred years of oppression.

Ah, the Americans! Yes, you gave us public education, and we thank you for that. You weren't perfect (no country really is) but for the few years after our country was freed, our economy was terrific. The peso back then could rival the dollar! We were once, I know it is hard to believe now, but do look it up, a power that other Asian nations looked up to!

    And then, the dictator.

Sometime in the early 70's or late 60's (I cannot remember the exact date) a dictator ruled our country. He was ousted in 1986 in one of the most stirring moments in human history - the EDSA People Power Revolution, a peaceful revolution http://www.philippine-history.org/edsa-people-power-revolution.htm

But by then, the damage had been done. Our economy tanked. There was political strife. Rebels everywhere. Widespread corruption. Lack of education meant that the new generation grew up ignorant. And the Philippines, once the prodigy of Asia, was no more than a vague memory of it's former glory.

There are still so many intricacies to this sad tale. If you want to learn more about us, please message me and I will be willing to converse with you. :)
