I know this has been simmering in Australia for some time. But it sounds like now they might be ready to do something else with Australia Day. I've posted two different perspectives on the issue, if you're from Australia will you continue to celebrate Australia Day:
It's not a good idea to celebrate colonial settler societies and their history. Just get on with life, give more than you receive and be humble and no need to gloat about homicide and rape. Australia Day: Why young Aussies are shunning their national holiday. "I used to host parties… I used to be really into it," the 24-year-old tells the BBC. But Kaitlyn is now part of a growing cohort of young Australians and others who are shunning the national day. It’s like not celebrating your birthday because you were born to a crack whore mom. True, your mom wasn’t the best and your childhood could’ve been better as a result but is that really a good enough reason to not appreciate that you’re alive as opposed to not even born?
I think there is merit in changing the day of the year. There should be a way to celebrate being Australian that doesn't alienate others, but I'm yet to think of it.
Australia day isn't Australia's birthday. That is January 1st, so the analogy sort of falls apart in the first line. Might be better to focus on what actually happened/happens rather than trying to make up some analogy that sheds no light on the topic. January 26 is the anniversary of the foundation of the colony of New South Wales, not the foundation of Australia. It didn't become our 'national day' when Australia became a nation, that tradition is more recent. We have only had a national holiday in every state on the actual day within my memory and most people seem more interested in the holiday than the reason. I went to the local mall this Australia day to do some shopping. Most of the shops were open & there were a lot of people about, none of whom were displaying flags etc. So, it isn't our 'birthday' and the tradition doesn't run as deep as some people might have you believe. I'm not strongly committed to either side of the argument, but I fully expect the day to get shifted inside the next 20 years with not too much fuss. It might end up on May 9, the date of the opeing of our first Parliament.
Balderdash, Australia as the wonderful nation it is did not exist before this time, it should be inclusive to all, including the Aborigines and a celebration of one of the best countries on Earth,
It’s a foundational moment(birthdays are foundational moments) by which Australia wouldn’t be Australia without it, and the story is Australians are crapping all over it because of their white guilt(darn that crack head mom) So yeah, the analogy holds because the logic holds. Analogies are comparisons of logic, not literal comparisons. Of course Australia doesn’t have a mom, let alone one addicted to crack and sex
You can celebrate Australia Day and be thankful. Or you can go live in the dirt, sans colonization if having nothing makes you happy.
