    The Australian Parliament voted today to levy a carbon tax of $23 per tonne on 500 of the biggest CO2 emitters in the country starting next July. Passage by the Australian Senate, where the balance of power is held by the Green Party, is assured next month.

    That noted left-wing mouthpiece, Forbes, is cheering the news.

    Of course, Forbes likes it because it returns revenues raised from the carbon tax to the people via an income tax cut, but Forbes publishing a pro-mitigation piece is still pretty remarkable. They usually publish science denier material.

    Yes - it is a positive step finally.

    Sure, the scheme is far from perfect. But the deniers are finally becoming marginalised as the jokes they are.

    When will the USA catch up?

    All it shows is that Global Warming is a political issue not about science.

    If it was science they could show proof this would stop the warming. They can not show that proof.

    Where is the science this will have an effect on GW? There is no proof this will stop the warming so it is just more politics to steal more citizens money.

    Pricing externalities to reduce pollution is an economic theory - not scientific. So yes - it should be approached with caution.

    However - emissions trading has shown to be very successful in the USA to address the problem of acid rain from sulfur emissions. It seems reasonable to see emissions trading as a first step in addressing the problem of global warming from CO2 emissions.

    The goverment LIED to the people before the election and said there wasnt going to be a carbon tax... Now most aussies want the minority goverment kicked out of office over it and a bunch of issues that they have shown themselves to be incapable of handling

    Personally I think it is about bloody time and we should have gone there over 10 years ago. While this has been hanging in the winds the big polluters had no incentive - in fact they had a disincentive

    The MAJORITY of Aussies voted for the parties which went to the last election (last 2 elections actually) with carbon pricing as their policy.

    That is why the government which was formed has passed legislation for emissions trading. It was their policy.

    Get over it. The deniers lost.

    the MAJORITY did NOT vote for labor..hence labor is in a MINORITY goverment..PLEASE try to get these things right BEFORE you post them.
