Battle of Megiddo: 15th Century BC

The Battle of Megiddo (15th century BC) was fought between Egyptian forces under the command of pharaoh Thutmose III and a large Canaanite coalition under the King of Kadesh. It is the first battle to have been recorded in what is accepted as relatively reliable detail.

Various precise dates have been suggested for the battle. The date is April 16, 1457 BC (according to the accepted Middle Chronology), although other publications place the battle in 1482 BC or 1479 BC.

The Battle of Megiddo was an Egyptian victory and resulted in a rout of the Canaanite forces, which fled to safety in the city of Megiddo.

Their action resulted in the subsequent lengthy Siege of Megiddo.

Megiddo is the first battle of which there is a detailed historical account. It is also the first recorded use of the composite bow and the first body count.[1] All details of the battle come from Egyptian sources -- primarily the hieroglyphic writings on the Hall of Annals in the Temple of Amun at Karnak, Thebes (now Luxor), by the military scribe Tjaneni. By reestablishing Egyptian dominance in Palestine, Pharaoh Thutmose III began a reign in which Egyptian Empire reached its greatest expanse.

(Evidently Megiddo was the largest of the Canaanite cities and on the trade route between Egypt and Babylon ... in the Valley of Jezreel so it was under seige all the time.)

 

Throughout its history, Megiddo was built and rebuilt, twenty-five times.

The Jews consider the destruction of the first Temple to have been the first Armageddon.

 

Well, it did cost a pretty penny to build so I guess its destruction was a catastrophe...

 

The history of Megiddo doesn't really jive with the Exodus story.

The Egyptian Army was fighting the civil war in Yemen... when Israel attacked.

 

Then the Egyptians were very smart.

 

Read Moshe Dayan's journals.. The Israelis planned the Six Day war beginning in 1953... He details the endless provocations again Syria, Lebanon and Egypt.

They wanted more land and water... and Egypt's oil reserves in Sinai.

 

And yet Israel gave up the Sinai .... Odd, considering how much they wanted the 'oil' underneat there, and that Egypt actually imports most of its oil ....

 

The first Temple was in Jerusalem, not Megiddo.

And the fact that there were battles between Egypt and Israel after the Nation of Israel was founded - kinda supports the Exodus version.

If they are not successfully defending themselves ... what happens?

 

I was alive at that point in time and I was paying attention. I remember the past.

I remember that Nasser acted first by telling the UN Peacekeepers to withdraw their forces from the Sinai. That was interpreted by everyone as the prelude to an attack. Only thereafter did the Israelis strike first in preemption.

Were you alive at the time so that you have actual memories of the events in question?

 

Take heart.. when Israel got out of Sinai, they stole all the leased Belgian oil equipment.

Egypt sells gas to Israel via the el Arish pipeline.

Stealing the natural resouces of other countries is also against the law.

 

Yes.. there were lots of prior events...

Nasser wanted the Aswan dam and Eisenhower agreed to finance it...... So Israel staged the Lavon Affair, and the US pulled out of the deal.

Nasser then nationalized the Canal to use the revenues to pay off the Brits and the French and finance the Aswan.

Meanwhile beginning in 1953, Sharrettt and Moshe Dayan began planning the six Day war for more land and water.

Egypt was deployed in Yemen for the civil war there.. Soviet intel warned Egypt what Israel was planning.. Nasser tried to regroup, but Israel went into ambush mode.

I used to lay on the floor every night and listen to BBC, Radio Free Europe and the voice of American ... all thru the 1950s and 1960.. reports of the constant small massacres of unarmed Lebanese farmers.

I was in Rome when Egypt was attacked and couldn't get back to Libya.

 

So how is selling actually stealing?

Israel tried to steal Egypt's oil reserves.... just as they stole the Golan, Shaaba Farms and West Bank as well as the aquifers.

The US paid to get them back and not Egypt sells gas to Israel.

 

The troubles between Israel and Arabs isn't America's business. Let the Arabs and the Israelis settle this dispute at the peace table or the field of battle. Not our problem.

 

No there was no Temple in Megiddo.. It was the LARGEST of the Canaanite cities.

 

I have agreed with that since the US bailed Israel out in 1967 and again in 1973.

 

Before you rush to agree with me there is one thing you should know. Israeli nationalism and Palestinian nationalism cannot coexist. One side will prevail and the other side will fade away.

Btw, Israel went to war in 1967 with French Mirages, not American jets. The Israeli/American military relationship only blossomed after the six day war.

You recall when Israel attacked the USS Liberty?

Saudi Arabia supplied fuel to the troops in Vietnam for the whole war.

There was really no US military presence in Arabia until after 1967... just a tiny refueling station and a consulate.

 

I remember the USS Liberty. That shows Israel is out for Israel.

Khobar Towers and Osama bin Laden show that the Saudis are out for the House of Saud.

When America returns home to deal with the present unpleasantness among the America people there won't even be a consulate in the stupid Middle East.

They can settle their own affairs. But America should sell them the weapons to do so if they can pay cash on the barrel head.

 

Not so sure about Khobar Towers... the Saudis had warned and warned the US military that security was lousy. The US didn't want to spend the money.

Even those Saudis who are ready to support King Abdullah's reforms like him..

They can buy weapons from anywhere........
