    Dom = Cathedral

    I was perusing some of my photos I took in 1963 in Berlin Then most of my photos were black/white. This enormous Cathedral is in a shot on an island in the river in Berlin. I will show you the restoration. When I figure out how, I will later include the black and white.

    I am using windows 10 and find it more difficult to use the cell phone to snap a photo and e mail it to me and make it so I can easily grab the file. I have also tried photobucket but I am a novice using that program.

    The towers were nearly gone when I saw it. There is no central spire and the good part is the dome in 1963 still is intact. There is fire damage on the outside in the black and white. No humans are in sight in the black and white. I was in East Germany taking photos of what the end of WW2 looked like. It was sad to see thousands of buildings in such poor condition.

    Once again. now that East Berlin is free, just look at the many people walking around. I noticed in the areas of East Berlin I visited, you seldom saw a person no matter how huge the street was or how much it mattered to the city. Across the dreaded wall, life was very clearly happy and well lived. I was told when in Berlin that during WW2, they grabbed the plans to all buildings of importance and hid them in a safer area of Germany where bombs could not reach. Much of Berlin today dates from 1945 until now, no matter how old it looks. The Dom here is one of the lucky buildings that was much easier to restore.

    I stood by the very platform he stood on. I don't recall being able to climb up to stand on it though. I would have taken photos from it had I got up there.

    But he said Ich bin ein Berliner. (I am a Berlin resident) Close though not totally accurate.

    It is like a person saying, I am a New Yorker. He did not come from Berlin but he was trying to bond with the Germans who were surrounded by the Communists.
