I'm curious about all the black crime threads. I understand some people feel reality is skewed when they see a show where the criminals are all white and the victims are all black. Or where all the black people speak like harvard grads, and donate all their time to helping white underprivileged children (whose parents are all criminals or strung out drug addicts). Sometimes people with liberal ideals really push the boundaries trying to force a more accepting society. The media seems to sway really hard one way or the other these days. Either a news show constantly harps on black crime and black on white racism, or it treats blacks like they are victim saints who can never do wrong. I think both share blame for the current racial division. Is there anyone here who thinks that almost all blacks harbor criminal intent? Is there anyone here who thinks that almost all blacks are perfect and saintlike?
It is always good to try to deal with reality. Blacks do commit proportionately a lot more than their share of crimes. You very seldom see a Japanese name in a crime story. As for me, Im not black, or white. I was tho, the object of a violent crime, and the perps were black. I cant help being afraid of, and distrustful of all blacks as a result. Even though I know its unfair and irrational. Same as a person who was in a plane crash knows the next one is not likely to crash, but, the phobia is now there and very difficult to overcome.
Thats very understandable. We do not always choose environment we occupy, and if that environment does not include many, or any black people then the most dramatic interactions will dictate how we feel about them in general. In your case a tragic interaction. I have a long list of negative interactions with blacks. Including a staged car accident in an attempt to defraud our insurance. Often I have been the "minority" white, and I have worked side by side with blacks and supervised them. Initially there can be a lot of hostility and distrust, and I have had to walk a fine line at times to keep from getting victimized or overreacting to it. Acceptance takes time and patience. But because I have existed in these environments I have a long list of positive interactions too. I have been saved from gang situations by black friends. I have found friendship with them when friends were few. They have backed me up in the workplace and helped me in finding job placement. Lots of laughter and crazy fun too. So, for me its a mixed bag. Some of the most despicable people I have ever met were black, but some of the strongest and most decent people I ever met were black too.
Surely has to do with your interactions with 'other culture'. Certain examples stick in your head over time. Yet these certain occasions shouldnt cloud any notions you have to generalize. Sadly many ppl do. Thats narrow and closed minded imo. Ppl are a product of their environment and as we mature we really should overcome these pre conceived ideas. We are all crabs in a bucket.
Maybe people think blacks are incapable of solving problems in the black community and thus feel the need to discuss black problems. Nobody's a saint. I'm not. But nobody wants to talk about the white trash meth labs, or the white hipster dope fiends, or the appalling lack of interest in education shown by rednecks in Alabama. We do like to argue about black crack houses, black addicts, and the lack of interest in education shown by black ghetto-dwellers in Detroit.
taking what happened to you in your experience, if you were attacked by white perps, would you hold the same feelings toward white people? ---------- the bottom part is not directed toward you, but to people in general. I find that people hold certain biases and tend to look for confirmation of those biases.
In my youth and the first half of my adulthood I was forced into a variety of dangerous situations for reasons of no particular importance to this discussion, but I found that after a brush with personal danger I was afterwards leery of all males approaching me in any circumstances that were less than very obviously perfectly innocent. I think that in these discussions we sometimes forget that we are by instinct flight or fight creatures as well as suit and tie wearing people. We are the chronically confused killer ape if you will. Anyway my wariness had sod-all to do with race or ethnicity and everything to do with the clothing styling and physical attitude of the approaching person -- for what that's worth to this discussion.
There are some who look for reason to attack black people in general. This is a way to get it out of their system. What exactly are you watching? By the way there are many Harvard grads who are black and some professors. A few years ago one was arrested for breaking into his own house. Yeah we liberals do stand in the way of open discrimination. Those tend not to be news shows, but I understand your confusion since most people today get their news from opinion screamers on TV. I think there are one or two who won't admit it. I doubt it that would be so delusional I don't know how that person could sign onto the internet.
I used a very generic term "news shows" to cover the whole spectrum from opinion pundits to the six o'clock local. Anyone looking for bias can find it anywhere. Mostly what I am talking about is the overall tone of the conversation. It seems like most people very disturbed by black crime feel that it is underplayed. Either that or they are not disturbed and feel it is overemphasized. This tends to push the discussion into a bottleneck where each side has to defend extreme stances. What I am asking for is the root of why we are bothered, if we are.
Well what bothers me is if a white person says something about a black he"s a racists but if it's the other way then the black has the right to say something because he has been opressed.Just seems to be a double standard. Why is crime not just crime.
I've been attacked by blacks several times. Like other posters I agree it's completely 'irrational' to notice any kind of pattern. *facepalm*
