So I am going to do the thing I rant at LW for doing and make a thread based on something a TV person said/did. But it seems this Brokaw thing has flooded out into the non TV public discourse and can't be avoided. 1. Was Brokaw's comment about Hispanics needing to do a better job of assimilating bigoted? Bigoted but true? Bigoted and false? 2. Was his discombobulated, semiliterate Twitter groveling fair game for sport, or a product of old age and dementia so better left alone? Will withhold more of my own opinions until seeing if anyone wants to discuss this.
Brokaw stumbled upon the truth and then folded like a cheap suit. Hispanics need to come here legally, take down their Mexican flag, and learn English or get the hell out....which goes for every other flavor of immigrants too.
I confess, I don't understand the angst of the democrats over this. He is uttering the same talking points that the democratic party did not 5 years ago. Hell, we have video of Chuck Schumer scolding the Senate with the same language... The fail here is that social media have no idea about how to be consistent in how they attribute their rage.
When was the last time TB was out in America to see who Hispanics are and where they live. It's good to still see him on tv.
I was a little surprised by Brokaw's comment. He was quite lucid but seemed to stumble a few times. I'm a big fan of Brokaw also.
It's historically fact and correct. Hispanic immigrants don't assimilate to America's culture, customs, traditions and language as other immigrants. Brokaw is in deep **** with the radical left, he was historically correct and didn't use cultural-marxist revisionist history saying that Hispanic immigrants make America great.
Maybe that is because no one on the left is telling Hispanics not to learn English. Tom Brokaw gave no indication that immigrants of all nations were not spending millions of dollars on English language at home education. Tom Brokaw gave no information on how immigrants are learning English any differently or any less than previous generations or other nationality groups. Tom dog whistles...."Hispanics and English" and the hounds start to barking.
Language was and is not a founding principle. If it was they would have written into the Constitution. What difference, I mean what possible difference could it make to you what language some one speaks? I never hear anyone complaining about any other ethnicity when they don't speak English - only Spanish speakers.
You know how multi-lingual your community is. The outlier is one who doesn't have an accent in LA. Go to Costco to hear Russian/ Korean/ Armenian/ Spanish/ Farsi before you hear English.
When I do that I have cultural shock. How I miss when America Was Great. One language that being English in America is the glue that holds the nation together.
Brokaw has always been a liberal media type who is shallow as p**s on a flat rock. He got what he has been dishing out for years -- called on the carpet for taking the side of America. Like a wimp he apologized in one day. Don't forget he stood by Dan Rather when Rather made his Bush fake document report. Of Rather, Brokaw, and Jennings, only Jennings tried to be halfway objective. Just my opinion and I won't apologize like Brokaw.
Such short-sightedness. When you get pulled over by a cop that speaks a language you don't understand or get paraded into a courtroom in front of a judge who's speaking a language you don't understand, then maybe you'll wake up. "oh what possible difference could it make, duh" I hope you're arrested by someone speaking Farsi, prosecuted by someone speaking German, and sentenced by a judge speaking Russian. Some things were left out of the Constitution because the Founding Fathers didn't anticipate open borders and the ignorance of the future populace. It was a given.
I don't live in a town. But when I venture down into the flatlands I mostly hear Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Farsi, Tagalog, Arabic, Kurdish and occasionally in a blue moon ebonics and English.
