Really? This is the artist they chose to go with?

It used to be that an artist had to be in the industry for a good number of years, but now it looks like a guy who's first album is less than three years old is now allowed to play in front of America's biggest audience.

Something else that bothers me is that rock music is being represented less and less in these types of shows. The Who was the last actual band with instruments to play the Super Bowl, and that was nearly four years ago. I know I'm biased, but I'd like more actual instruments being played rather than dancing while lip-syncing.

Plus, Bruno Mars just annoys the hell out of me. I used to like him and I own his first album, but I just can't stand him anymore. I guess the high, whiny voice finally got to me.

Anyway, just thought I'd post my two cents on the matter.

They should team him up with the Bieberbomb for a shadow/reflection duet. Would probably double the number of people watching the Sup/bowl... at least for a coupla minutes.

I wonder if there will be a little wardrobe malfunction this year? But yeah, I pretty much step away from the half time show now because they've been pretty crap for awhile. It is pretty bad when commercials are more interesting...

I don't mind it so much...

For one, I usually don't watch the halftime show anyway...

Two, Bruno Mars is actually a talented cat...

One of the few actually putting out good, different, decent sounding music these days...

That's not to say that all of his songs are great, but, it's not bad music...

Personally, I'd like to see U2 host a half-time show...

By the way, Beyonce's half-time show generated more tweets than any other topic since the software launched. Not current events, not even Miley Cyrus, Beyonce at the Super Bowl. Apparently some people actually care about this stuff.

I'm sure Bruno Mars will be just as popular. They've head "geezer" rock shows before with Paul McCartney, "The Who" and Tom Petty.
It's not always music catered to a younger audience. They need to stay away from shockers like Lady GaGa and Kesha and go for a more mainstream performer and Bruno Mars is as good as any. I don't think it's a bad choice though not my personal preference.

I would love to see this happen, but it's very unlikely. They aren't famous enough.

This is where I abandon my pragmatism and become an idealogue. Admittedly highly unlikely, but who cares? Still totally worth pushing to see how far it'll go. You've got to admit, they've been around for 30 years. And nobody actually has to know any songs to enjoy their live show. The music has always been secondary anyway. They didn't play anything I knew when I saw them years ago and I had a blast. Of course the live atmosphere is a little different when you're actually there and you go home soaked in fake blood that doesn't wash out of your clothes for two years. Ah, good times. 8)

Speaking of bands that have been around for 30 years, I'm still wondering why Metallica hasn't played the Halftime show yet. They have nine albums, have achieved mainstream success, and are musical veterans due to being in the music industry for three decades. I can't understand why the NFL picks new artists like Bruno Mars over artists that have proved themselves and are still able to sell out stadiums.

Good question. They've about reached that crusty, irrelevant stage of their career now too. Where they're pretty much just a nostalgia act. And people just want to hear the classics and don't really care about the new stuff anymore.

They're a lot like Madonna in that sense. She had the highest grossing tour of 2012 worldwide, but the album released before the tour failed, proving that her fans only care about her older material. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/madonna-has-the-years-top-grossing-tour-nearly-300m-20121229

Metallica is at that stage as well. They haven't released anything decent since Load/Reload, and for most fans, And Justice for All was their last decent release. I'm still curious to hear their new album next year, but I'm not really that excited. Death Magnetic barely made up for St Anger, and that should have been the easiest thing to do.

I'm just going to be honest. I'm not a hardened elitist when it comes to Metallica. The black album is still - to this day - probably the best produced album ever made by anybody. Bob Rock did a fantastic job with it. And it sits right there on the dividing line between metal and pop and does so beautifully. It's just a timeless classic. To me, that was the Metallica swan song. Everything after that was just a different band.
