I was talking with my Grandpa last night and he was telling me about his days in Officer's Candidate School. I had always known that he had been in the Army, but never knew he'd been an officer. In an infantry officer, specifically, who had risen to the rank of captain. I told him how badly I wanted to be in the military but was medically disqualified. He laughed and said, "Well, you'd have made a great officer and I would have been proud to have you as a lieutenant in my company." That got me to thinking. Maybe I've got this whole inheiritance thing all backward. My grandpa worked very hard to get his commission and earn the rank of captain. So....shouldn't he be able to do whatever he wants with it? Why should he have to just "give up" his commission? Why couldn't he just...give it to me? I'll take over the rank, and take command of a company. Never mind the fact I don't have the qualifications or meet the requirements or even...deserve to wear captains bars. It doesn't matter...my grandpa worked hard to get it and he's told me all his stories about being in the military (just like rich parents teach their kids that poor parents don't) so I feel I am entitled to being a military officer. Hopefully I will be able to pass on the rank of lieutenant colonel to my son. And my grandson would be a brigadier general! What if every military officer did this? Why, we could save money because we wouldn't need West Point or to train any other officers. Wait a minute...if a commission were just handed to someone for no other reason than who they were born to without any regard for experience or ability...wouldn't that make for a really (*)(*)(*)(*) poor officers' corps? Something to think about.
