That is the thing that I find so crazy about Republican rhetoric. All of the Western blue states, California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado... have voter initiated issues in just about every election. That is how marihuana became legal. It was voter initiated ballot measures that now require all tax increases to be voted on - mostly as a reaction to the Reagan era unfunded mandates.

A while back, in Colorado there was a special election to increase property taxes to better fund public libraries. The turnout was overwhelming and the measure easily passed. Colorado has some pretty good libraries.

In places like the above named, there is a great deal more voter involvement of the direction of the state. It is almost impossible for the legislature to pass a law that most people do not like. The most controversial laws often have to go through the election process. The people of Oregon, and Washington, have voted to institute stringiness environmental regulations. It is the people that stop oil and coal terminals.

So when conservatives are claiming that blue states are somehow authoritarian, they obviously are not describing the situation on the ground. Ever wonder why so many conservatives are so comfortable with Trump's less than honest comments? It is part of the culture, as I'm sure you have noticed in this thread.

What bothers me most about California is the theft of freedom.

However, the movement that has birthed the modern conservative (if you can call it that) movement come from that defeat. And strengthened when Nixon signed environmental protection legislation. These were the events that launched the Heritage Foundation and FOX News, among others. This can be seen in that the majority of issues that most animate conservatives, besides abortion, are the changes to the US that Johnson's efforts made possible. That is to say, even though Trump and his most fervent followers are still fighting against Hillary, the party is still fighting against Johnson.

I think that Johnson is a good match-up to Trump. Even though Trump claims the greatest margin of victory, Johnson won by a larger margin. Unlike the incompetent Trump, Johnson was a master at getting things through congress. Trump likes to pretend that he has done more than any other president. Yet, if one looks into all that Johnson accomplished, and how much his efforts have fundamentally changed the US, brought us into modernity; I'm sure Johnson accomplished more in an afternoon, than Trump ever will.

There is no comparing LBJ to Trump. LBJ was the senate majority leader prior to becoming JFK's VP and then president. He knew how to work congress through experience. Also LBJ had huge Democratic margins in both the senate and the house. In other words, LBJ knew what he was doing and how to get things done. Trump doesn't.

Because democrats keep blocking good legislation that will help the american people. Nancy Pelosi walked out away from a bi-partisan infrastructure meeting a few weeks ago.

Get real. We all know it was Trump who walked out after yelling at Pelosi because she had earlier accused him of a cover up.

Over on FOX, on most of their shows, they have been regularly trashing California, and usually in a most dishonorable way. Funny how that works, isn't it? Now conservatives are all over the internet, parroting what FOX has been telling them, most of who live in dust bowls.

The Dust bowl was freaking 80 years ago. WE fixed our problems. Ca is busy creating theirs. It's funny you find the truth dishonorable.

California taxes every freaking thing there is.

Earlier this year the Democrats were standing outside of the state Capitol looking at the rain and trying to figure out how to tax the rain.
One liberal assemblyman suggested If you live in a city and it rains 1/2 of an inch, every household would pay a .10 cents tax on every 1/10th of inch of rain that falls.

The California state legislature shelved the California water tax a couple of months ago but will be reintroduced next year and it will pass and Gov. Newsom will sign it into law.

Name just one other state that taxes cow farts like California does.

Back before California became a totalitarian state (one party rule where the Democrats represent over 3/4 of the state legislature) the legislature needed 2/3 of the votes to raise or come up with a new tax.

If the Democrats tax hike or new tax couldn't get 2/3 of the vote they would reclassify the tax as a fee where they only need a simple majority vote.

Fees are nothing more than a tax.

"White supremacist" is another word or phrase that has been corrupted to further a leftist political agenda.

The Aryan Brotherhood (AB) is a prison gang and the ME (Mexican Mafia) is also a prison gang and are brown supremist .

The Black Guerrilla Family is another black supremacist prison gang.

So why does the Democrats want to give convicted felons and prison inmates the right to vote ?

Could it be that the ME and the black supremacist in prison outnumber the AB and will vote the Democratic ticket ?

Wait a second, the AB would also vote the Democratic ticket because the Democrats since the late 60's have been weak on crime as they have been on national defense.

Wouldn't the reconguista socialist who run for political office as Democrats also brown nationalist ?
    Yes they are.

Can you be more specific about the "theft of freedom"? One example: California was the first state to allow medical marijuana but it took a few more elections for the people to vote for complete "freedom" of recreational cannabis use.

Unfortunately several posters don't realize that your comments are half whimsy/ half wisecracks.

Yes the state legislature/ governor do raise taxes frequently, a tradition going back to well before Reagan who maintains the all time record. On-the-other-hand, the people of California can often and do challenge legislative decisions. Brown decided to take the tax hike of 2012 directly to the voters even though the state assembly would have passed it in a minute. Californians approved it anyway. Of-course the people hit the hardest by tax increases are the most wealthy yet upper income people continue to move to California.

In 2012 the Democrats didn't have 2/3 of the votes to raise taxes, they were short one Democratic assemblyman to give them the super majority. So Brown wrote up a ballot initiative with a whole crap load of lies and the low information voters voted to raise taxes on one group of people in California.

Anytime when a state legislature is 2/3 of any political party and every state executive office is held by the same political party, it becomes a totalitarian state run by one political party.

The California Democratic party thought this through very well.

Motor voter, automatically registering everyone even non citizens to vote when renewing or applying for a drivers license or state ID.

Allowing anyone to register to vote and cast a vote on election day after the polls have closed.

legalizing ballot harvesting which breaks the custody of a ballot and leads to voter fraud.

Keeping the welcome mat out at the Mexican border insures California remaining being a totalitarian state.

It is why home prices are so high in California, there are plenty of people with money to buy them. In Nebraska or Ohio you can get a good sized farmhouse for a tenth, or less, of what it would cost in California, but no one is moving to Nebraska or Ohio. I grew up in Ohio. But then in the seventies, my dad packed us up and headed to California. Never made it past Colorado though. Ohio has been losing House seats after every Census. Colorado gained a seat after the last one and Oregon is slated to gain a seat after the upcoming census.

I'm sure that much of the political divide in our country is a result of a brain drain from the midlands to the coasts, and especially to the West Coast. There are no real opportunities in the red states and those with ambitions flee to where there are opportunities, where the action is. California is one of those states where the ambitious flock. Colorado and Washington are two other such states. The statistics bear it out. More college educated with higher incomes than the national average.

There are places in the US where the rate of college educated individuals is more than twice the national average. In every one of those places, the Republican Party never wins.

All you can do is invalidate, the desperate example of having no argument and so middle-school [arguing that the other team cheated and the refs were on the dole

But you forget that some Republican legislators agree with taxes. So angry GOP 'primaries in' a more conservative candidate and end up losing the district to a Democrat. Moderates are punished by the GOP with a self-defeating outcome. Is that smart?

The poorest states in America are overwhelmingly Republican-majority. So when posters from these states impulsively attack Democratic rule I view it within that context. But the need for affordable housing is critical in California. Just trying to handle all the poverty-stricken [some homeless/ mentally-physically deprived] is daunting.

Self-destructive also. I listen to KFI radio when running errands even though several of it's program are hosted by Republican inclined. I was a total junkie of Phil Hendrie for years. 'John and Ken' for example rail against the mayor due to the homelessness problem yet admit that the solution is going to cost lots of $. Republicans get hysterical if one dine is taxed. Angry/ irrational.

John Kobylt isn't s happy camper with thousands of "vagrants" as he calls them sleeping, shooting up drugs and pooping on the sidewalks so near his home in Holmby Hills.

John and Ken are a good source of what is really going on in the state of California.

I think that the homeless problem is one of the worse facing our country. And it irritates me that the only response from Republicans is to condemn the homeless and blame Democrats.

It may, in the end, require a fundamental shift in our social structure. In my career, I have designed machines that were designed for the sole purpose of replacing humans with machines. Machines don't come in late or ask for time off and many are willing to work around the clock, nonstop. They are more efficient and more accurate. Between automation and computerization, I can envision a time where very little work is required of people. This is all fine and dandy, but it leaves a great number of people with no way to make a decent living.

My preferred solution is the Jetson's model, where the workday is reduced to only four hours. However, more and more, I am thinking that the guaranteed minimum income may be the more accomplishable and the most beneficial to the most people.

Still, I think that the homeless problem can only be solved by government intervention. If nothing else then to just build low cost apartment buildings.
