A thousand year idea was ahead of its time? We literally took the most dysfunctional aspect of the HRE becuase the founders were too stupid to think up an actual solution.

It shows (once again) the authoritarian nature of the left. They want to micromanage our lives.

A bad idea. Abstaining is also a vote. By this new bill, the democratic principle of choice is being denied.

In that case, you do not know what it is.

The president doesn't give land and fiefdoms to noblemen electors in order to hold their allegiance and vote. That worked fairly well for the emperors until the advent of gunpowder.

Do big businessmen, oil companies, media owners, pharmaceutical companies, arms manufacturers perhaps equate to noblemen electors?

There's probably a handful of CEO's who sit in the electoral college, but idk. I don't think any electors are given personal land grants. So far they have been semper fi to the people of their respective states with exceedingly rare exceptions of a renegade individual or two who did not vote with the people of their state, but they made no difference, rather only fools of themselves.

    Nothing wrong with mandatory voting

    One huge advantage.

The vote cards have to be kept short and simple

Oh! And it gets REAL informal

I was thinking about that myself. But generally, you have to register well in advance of voting day and maybe you haven't yet decided by then. Our last really big election I was fully determined to vote for a particular party until the day before the vote when the representative made a comment that really upset me, so ......... no vote from me after all.

If you argument relies on a gun, then you have already lost.

    Example

You have a crook, a liar and a cheat blatantly squatting his bot in the Oval Office

We on the other hand have ‘spilled” more prime Ministers than you can count

At present we are ramping up to put heads on poles after it was found that the Liberal government has been pork barreling to a fare thee well

California has automatic voter registration every time someone gets a license.

Except its a violation of Free Speech. Your Right to speak also includes the Right to NOT Speak. And voting is speech.

    I found your problem.

Why are you OK with Gov FORCING you to vote?

I guess a nation of disarmed serfs will accept anything.

Note the pointed lack of a response your question. Darth can't say 'Yes, Australia is a communist country' because that would clearly be untrue. So then, when confronted with the patent absurdity of this line of argument the response is .... silence. Because the alternative would be to admit that well hell yes, maybe compulsory voting in a multi-party democracy isn't totalitarian after all.

Maybe compulsory voting might actually force politicians to be accountable to the entire electorate rather than just that small portion at either end of the political spectrum (depending on their political ideology) who would vote for them under almost any circumstances anyway. Maybe that would have to work really hard to convince convince the undecided middle ground their policies were right. Maybe they might (heaven forbid) actually have to moderate the more radical (far left or far right) ends of their (inner/unspoken) policy agendas for fear of alienating the vast vast majority of voters who sit in the middle of the political spectrum and don't want radical ideologies imposed on them by their leaders no matter what end of the political spectrum they come from.

In other words maybe, just maybe, as is the case in Australia compulsory voting is actually a good idea that holds politicians accountable to every voting age citizen in the country. And apparently, if you are Darth you can't have than can you?

Are you sure you want to go there? If so, your argument is that slaves had free speech because they could not speak their opinions and they could not vote.

    Some words from an Aussie.

I'm glad we have a high voter turn out and nobody really seems to find compulsory voting a burden.

The voting stations (schools, public halls, even surf clubs) put on a BBQ/cake stall which raises money for their cause and makes the whole process pleasant and community orientated.

BTW, I never vote in local council elections and to date I've only received one fine of $50, and filling out the back of the fine with a lame arse excuse got the fine waived.

Oh cool, make him look like a fan of slavery and tie it all together! Height of dishonest, implications. Mix a long stretch with pretzel "logic". And cap it off with a strawman, you fabricated from the fertile grounds, of your mind. Way to go!

Maybe by some weird twisted pretzel logic you could say that. No clue how though. Were you drunk when you wrote your post? Because seriously there is absolutely no way that you could get this out of what I said.

How does forcing ppl to vote help track them?

And how does that make it not authoritarian?
