So "the concept of Gods or God > the Bible > the Christian God", is valid then? Without the written word all that is left is a feeling or notion that a God exists correct? In other words all the thoughts you have in your head about God and how they guide you to worship him come from man, including yourself?
The Holy Spirit guides me and I hope most believers. As an Eastern Orthodox believer we have a much more mystical bent too our faith then our Roman brethren. But as I said I may not be as knowledgeable on this subject or at least as eloquent as is needed to describe the Holy Spirit and its effects upon the faith of followers of Christ.
Which I addressed with my mentioning of a feeling or notion but does the holy spirit use words to guide you as in direct communication? My point in all of this is simply that the written text of man is where all the knowledge of God comes from. You wouldn't even be able to mention the holy spirit in the correct context without the written text yet you still somehow believe you are not bound to it.
I would disagree since the Church knowledge was passed down orally for the most part when it was first founded. But now yes scriptures combine with Church Tradition and discourse from the Church Fathers is what we use. But with out the Holy spirit those words would be dead and without any truth. How can I describe the Holy Spirit too some one who does not have faith? It is like describing a sunset to a man that cannot see or feel. You can't and no amount of science or logic will ever be able to explain such a force. The Holy Spirit is what parted the Red Sea. It was what actually formed the flesh body of Christ in the womb of Mary. It is the power that gave the martyrs in the coliseum the strength to face the lions. Frankly it is the most powerful force besides love in the universe. Believe me I know how this all sounds. I am a man of this century and I know that believing in God is not the "cool" or "logical" thing. But from where I am standing I cannot look back upon my life and not believe. Shucks I wish I could some times because I know how unworthy I am of the gifts bestowed upon me. So many gifts that I will never be able to pay back even a fraction of it too the world before I die.
I wonder then...by claiming this to be the "Word of God"....is it not heresy, considering you just made clear it is not?
Very good observation, but, who follows Plato and his philosophy? As far as it is known, people follow God and the majority ignore what Plato thought centuries ago. At the end, there is no problem for religious people, but Plato's admirers do have problems trying to enlist more followers, let me count their number, you, we have one... and another here and another there... whoa!
Not so, but Plato's philosophy is no "problem" for religious people, due to if their number still growing is because what Plato said can't affect them. Even when in this case philosophy tries to question religion, both tendencies are different: religion is obedience to a god or system, and finding answers is through the given doctrines; on the other hand philosophy is not subjected to a belief and finding answers is through trial and error methods, rational arguments, etc.
You just said omnipotence means "can do all things". Even contradictory things? Like creating an object so heavy that He cannot pick it up? BTW, insulting my logic...while being able to offer none yourself...doesn't help your case.
Does it make it "less cheap" if one asks....Can an Omnipotent and Eternal Being...with the characteristic of unstoppable immortality and the power or capable of doing anything....destroy Himself? Again the "cheap answer" is "He wouldn't want to." The more difficult answer is...it's a paradox.
Shouldn't the answer be we cannot know? I mean God cannot be fully understood by his creation. A paradox to us could very well be a simple matter too a being of infinite power. Or lets say God can do one of the things you have said, it would not lessen God it would just show humanity again that we cannot quantify Gods abilities with our simple words. If our words are inadequate, we should not disparage God because of it. Oh and yes God can go agianst the Bible he is not bound by a book no matter how important or inspired.
I gather some force helped/changed/guided you at some point in your life. What makes you so sure it was this entity described in Jewish books? Why could it not been an entity described in far eastern books?
You know there is no way for me too truly be sure until I die. But I studied and looked at all of the major religions out there and made my choice accordingly. I was raised Lutheran in the middle of the united states. There are not a lot of Orthodox Christians around here and most of those are not from my country. My decision was made with all the information at my disposal and I must have faith that I was guided to the right choice. Other faiths have a lot going for them and I feel many of them are touching upon the truth. But they just fall short and I believe the reason is Jesus Christ.
Very nice response, but If I may suggest, the bolded may have had a major influence in your decision. I also was raised Lutheran but have not reached your conclusion at this time. However, I think, if there is an eternal bliss for humans, there is more than 1 path to achieve this. Religions offer fellowship and that can go along way in day to day living.
1. Omnipotence in itself is a paradox. To be ominipotent means (as Felicity noted) "can do all things". But contradictory things are included in "all things".....i.e. create that which cannot be destroyed by the Creator....."suicide" of a being that is eternal and immune to all destruction....or the simple creation of an object which cannot be manipulated by a being supposedly capable of manipulating anything it can create. 2. My original premise was aimed at those who believe the Bible is the "inerrant and eternal Word of God"...if you don't believe that, then it wouldn't apply to you.
You could very well be correct, I can only prey I made an informed decision. By culteral bias would of course have played a role in my thought processes but I have been influanced by many diverse cultures that include all of the major religions (even wiccans).
ah spell check. I post from work in between calls and my spelling is suspect at the best of times. See my sig for further information.
