Owning a gun is a right here and rights cannot be licensed. Our government is clearly better than autralians but we know that even our government is not competent enough to decide who is qualified ( licensed ) to own a gun. We have a better and smarter system and will stick to it while others give away everything to their new church of government
"Our government is clearly better than autralians but we know that even our government is not competent enough to decide who is qualified ( licensed ) to own a gun." Does that even make sense? Oxymoronic at the very least. Listen, as I stated before, I'm done with this thread, all my points have been made, lay on all the crap you want, pile it on, I wont be reading or replying to any of it. The amount of illogical and downright asinine conjecture made by the supporters of the 2nd amendment has turned me off discussing it any further. If any logical minded fellows who support me and my view on this particular topic want to see why I'm giving up my one-man crusade, look to the past pages in this thread. Cheers.
It was not oxymoronic or senseless it was quite accurate and clear as you well know. The conjectures made by you concerning the second amendment have been crushed and your entire position ruined so feel free to run along.
So YOU owning guns and using them for YOUR purposes is fine. Yet ME owning guns and defending MY family if need be, is not. Heard it all before dude. Or I guess I should say "mate". I like guns, I like the mechanical aspect of guns, I like shooting for sport, I have a LE cert for my state I (meaning I can become a police officer here) and I like living in a place I can fight fire with fire up to and including high powered semi auto "assault TYPE rifles" of which I own four. Funny though none of them went out today while I was at work and did anything. Not even shot up a squirrel den. I also like hot rods. Fast loud hotrods, and I know for fact many Aussies do as well.
If you haven't already cut and run off, do you have any new ideas on dealing with the hundreds of thousands of gang members here in the US that do between 50 and 80% of the murders? They could care less about gun laws, just as they could care less about the tons of narcotics they sell. Do you want bigger prisions that don't rehabilitate? What punishments will stop their murder sprees?
Please use the bb-code for creating lists. Looks like this Also, this! Much better than a 12" impenetrable wall of text, is it not? If you want to type more than is convenient for this, use {hr}{/hr} brackets (with [] instead of {} ).

And now, onto your post! 1. I don't defend gun ownership and carry to defend against a tyrannical government. Any such government would outlaw gun ownership long before going full Hitler, making the whole endeavor pointless. I do; however, think you might be underestimating the advantage of 350 million guns in the hands of 300 million citizens. Planes and nukes can only do so much - at some point you have to actually go and round up the people - and that involves some sort of ground invasion. An armed citizenry does in fact present a fairly significant hurdle for any totalitarian government. Again, that doesn't mean gun ownership now = gun ownership then.

2. Oh, you're an Australian too? Awesome! Anyway, gun liberty has nothing whatsoever to do with gun deaths. Why? For the same reason drug legalization has nothing whatsoever to do with crime committed under the influence. You're targeting the collective, and thus placing restrictions on innocent parties to restrict the guilty. Aim your measures at the individual. Has he initiated force, or indicated his imminent intent to do so? Then you are justified in using retaliatory force. Otherwise you are attacking innocent parties, just as the drug warriors attack innocent parties when they cage you and take away your job for smoking some plants - arguing that while you might not have shown any desire to commit crime to feed your opium habit, statistically some percentage of users do, and so this justifies force against you all, as a group.

If you live in WA I'd be happy to take you down the shooting range. You can shoot some handguns, we'll go over which regulations I find absurd and why - and if at the end of the day you haven't changed your mind, I'll buy you a beer. Best wishes, Steady Pie
Now THAT is what I call a rebuttal!! But SP sweetie, gun ownership may have little to do with gun deaths but gun storage seems to have a hell of a lot to do with reduction in gun related deaths
