Can we have an honest, respectful discussion about guns in America?

Hmh. I have not yet seen that sentiment posted in this thread. Did I miss something? What else do you have to add to the discussion?

NYC has very strong gun laws.

we require registration and permits for all guns.

its pretty hard to get a concealed-carry permit, but not too difficult to keep a handgun at home.

we also have strong mandatory sentencing for illegal possession of a handguns in public.

the result? our murder rate this year is the lowest since the 1950s.

lol, your crime rate is dropping because "diversity" has been getting pushed further and further out by gentrification. The people who helped give New York its high crime rates in the 80's and 90's can no longer afford a $3,000 a month studio apartment.

 

That's because NYC endorses diversity and the entire city has to be under military occupation by the NYPD that has 34,000 armed soldiers playing cops and robbers.

As one liberal liked to brag, Mayor Bloomberg "I have my own army in the NYPD, which is the seventh biggest army in the world."

 

It's mostly gentrification, though. Rich Jews commit far less crime than poor blacks as a group.

 

While many pro-gun Americans readily agree that criminals and the mentally ill should not have access to firearms, every time the anti-gunners attempt to draft legislation, they always seek to restrict the rights of lawful citizens, not just the criminals and mentally ill. Additionally, time and time again, it's been shown that every time pro-gun citizens have given the anti-gun citizens an inch, they've taken a mile. Clinton's gun control bill and Obama's attempt to reinstitute it are good examples of this problem.

 

Good post. The gun banners have no idea what they are asking for. Gatling type guns would just be the start.

Gun control has always been about disarming the white majority. It was never about stopping crime or saving lives. That's just the excuse they use.

I used to live in Los Angeles and El Paso years ago----they are more and more looking like Mexico as we speak.

 

There are more than 33,000 gun deaths in America annually. That dwarfs all other advanced nations by comparison.

Assuming that even the most avid firearm enthusiasts recognize that is unacceptable, I would encourage the NRA, the well-funded Washington lobbyist most responsible for influencing the nation's politicians, to produce a plan and propose legislation to reduce that horrific number.

Too often, impotence is expressed concerning America's ability to confront firearm carnage. That is an endorsement of the insane status quo.

Those who support the status quo should step aside for the good of the country. Either that or confront the problem.

Well over half of those are suicides. Do you really believe banning guns will cure depression? Of the gun murders every year, most are black male-on-black male murders. Banning guns will not stop gang-bangers.

And who gets to determine who is sane and who isn't?

 

If we have a one-time mental health check on all Internet users, we could ban most political partisans. You'd have to take up basket weaving or some other hobby.

 

And NY wants to take your guns. You can thank the NRA they haven't.

 

Take blacks out of the equation and Latinos who have short roots in America out of the equation of criminal gun deaths and Europe's gun deaths either dwarfs or are more comparable to America.
