Canada seems to be censoring news from Australia.

I saw a video on my wife's iphone a few days ago and wrote down the title of the video......
but then it seems as if no search engine will find me a direct link.

I am assuming that somebody in Australia may be able to find this easily.

Are news videos from Australia being suppressed here in Canada or perhaps in all of North America?

Aussies are weird. I try to watch some of their movies but without subtitles I can't understand a word they're saying.

Canadian troops in WWI and WWII came back to Canada saying that it was awesome to work with Australians when they were given some sort of nearly impossible suicide type mission to pull off.

Yet we can understand all the American dialects plus the British ones and the South Africans - we can even understand the Kiwis :p

If you really want to test yourself try understanding some real Scottish accents on for size. You'll soon be wishing you never dared to try.

I have this weird ability to understand accents. There might be one or two obscure ones I've struggled with, and obviously local slang can be an issue, but once I get the cadence I'm good. Just watched a series of films about West Indians in the UK with some of the most full on West Indian accents you've ever heard. Didn't miss a word.

I can't for the life of me work out why any intellgent person would want to watch Sky, let alone listen to a fact free zone like Sharri Markson. Given that this is part of the Murdoch empire I don't imagine it will be that hard to find. I'm sure Fox will spew out something similar if you keep watching.

Australians have no problems with a dense Scots accent, either.

I don't think it's weird at all. It just means you LISTEN. Australians generally are very good at grasping origins and understanding a wide array of heavily accented English. We've evolved into listeners, and we tend towards deferential in our listening (thanks to the double influence of both English and Asian cultures).

I find it MUCH weirder to see very good, but accented, English subtitled on American TV. Even native speakers are subtitled .. which defies all logic and reason. How is it that an Australian doesn't need subtitles for a strong Irish Accent, but an American does? It should be the other way around, since the Irish accent is much closer to the American accent. Yet Americans can't understand it? Incredible!

As for the OP, I suspect C@nada canned the piece because it was 'controversial'.

I have no problem with Billy Connolly. He's one of my favorite comedians that I've not heard anything from for years now. My problem is with extreme Scottish accents they put into movies with no subtitles like I'm supposed to be some kind of multicultural linguist. Well I'm not so stop it already!

But they're speaking English! Why would you need to be a linguist?

I don't know about the beer factor, but plenty of women have the same problem via wine. The apple body. The death body.

You can call Scottish bastardization of the Queen's English what you want. Doesn't keep me from turning it off when I can't understand a damn word being spoken. Goes for Australians too.

I've seen US TV shows subtitle other Americans speaking in some southern accents. I didn't have much trouble picking up what they were saying, but apparently US audiences are presumed to struggle. I have heard that the film 'The Full Monty' initially flopped in the US until it was re-released with subtitles. Can't say I had any issue with it.

Yes, now that absolutely takes the cake. Either media thinks all Americans are terrible listeners, or all Americans are terrible listeners.

To fail to understand your own countrymen, requires a concerted will. You can't not understand unless you're making no effort at all. You would need to be quite determined.

But it's English, just accented and with some dialect words ... most of which are familiar to Australians. We grow up with plenty of exposure to British culture via media/arts etc. By the time we're in high school most of us can understand thick Irish or Scots, and can tell the difference.

We're also pretty good at spotting the difference between a Thai and a Vietnamese accent, or Singpore and Hong Kong, or New Zealand and South Africa, or Spanish and Italian, or German and Dutch, etc etc. I can spot a two generations removed Greek accent, or Arab accent, or Eastern European accent .. and that's in people born here, who technically have no accent. I can hear the difference between a Mainlander (Chinese) and someone from Taiwan or HK. I can spot the difference between Filipino and Indonesian accents. A Welsh accent can be spotted amongst a crowd of Brits from a mile away. I also know the difference between a Nigerian accent and a Kenyan accent, and the difference between a Pakistani accent and an Indian accent.

And all of the above is quite common in adult Australians .. I have no special talents. It's just the natural result of a multicultural society, in which we mix with people from all over the world. We engage and interact with many different accents as a matter of course, so it's difficult to avoid knowing this stuff.

Yup...... that would be the reason!!!!!

I could be wrong... I often am......
but I do believe that as the rather obvious lying and corruption of Dr. Tony Fauci comes out for all to see, this will eventually become extremely good news for
all Australians and all Canadians and all Americans and all Israelis, because it will decrease the power and control of China, (which to my thinking sure looks like an aspiring Fourth Reich)?!
