Canadian-American Muslim cleric : Husband May Strike His Wife 'To Salvage The Marriage'

During a September 15 lesson at Az-Zahraa Islamic Centre in Richmond, British Columbia, American Shi'ite cleric Azhar Nasser discussed the "wife-beating verse" in the Quran. He said that because a man provides for his wife, he has the right to "intimacy" whenever he pleases, and that some sources say that the wife is forbidden from denying or delaying intimacy lest "the angels ask Allah to deprive her of His mercy." He also said that according to some scholars, a woman cannot leave the house without her husband's permission because he might desire her while she is away. During his lecture, titled "Battered & Bruised," Nasser said that in "extreme cases," when the wife is "immodest," the man must first admonish her, and if that does not work he must separate the beds to "show his discontent." Then, if he feels that it may "rectify the problem and salvage the marriage," he may strike his wife. Azhar Nasser, born and raised in Michigan and a graduate of the University of Michigan, currently resides in Richmond, B.C., Canada. You'll find the same attitude in the fundamentalist sects of all three Abrahamic religions unfortunately.

I didn't claim that you would, however there are a number of Christian sects where physical punishment of a disobedient wife is not only tolerated, but encouraged.

Depends on the country.. Syria and Egypt have poor literacy.

 

Quran (38:44) - "And take in your hand a green branch and beat her with it, and do not break your oath..." Allah telling Job to beat his wife (Tafsir).
Sahih Bukhari (72:715) - A woman came to Muhammad and begged him to stop her husband from beating her. Her skin was bruised so badly that it is described as being "greener" than the green veil she was wearing. Muhammad did not admonish her husband, but instead ordered her to return to him and submit to his sexual desires.

Abu Dawud (2141) - "Iyas bin ‘Abd Allah bin Abi Dhubab reported the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) as saying: Do not beat Allah’s handmaidens, but when ‘Umar came to the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) and said: Women have become emboldened towards their husbands, he (the Prophet) gave permission to beat them."

Sheikh Yousef al-Qaradhawi, one of the most respected Muslim clerics in the world, once made the famous (and somewhat ridiculous statement) that "It is forbidden to beat the woman, unless it is necessary." He went on to say that "one may beat only to safeguard Islamic behavior," leaving no doubt that wife-beating is a matter of religious sanction.

 

The hadiths came from Persia 200 years after Muhammed.

No its well documented literacy is Egypt is terrible. .. also Pakistan.. Syria's literacy has been declining for two decades. Literacy in Afghanistan has severely declined since the 1970s.

What sects?

 

David Koresh the leader of the Branch Davidians, a Christian sect, believed he was Jesus Christ and therefore the only man at the compound that got to have sex with the women, 13 yr old girls to 50 yr old married women. I don't blame "Christianity" for David Koresh.
When Muslims follow the commandments in the Koran to "fight", "kill", "slay" and "smite the necks" of the unbelievers "until... religion should only be for Allah", I DO blame the Islamic religion.
I blame Christianity when Christians die because they tried to "love their enemy" and "turn the other cheek" to him when stricken.

 

Or, maybe he simply identifies as a Christian when in fact the doctrine of Christianity has little to nothing to do with his core beliefs or how he lives his daily life.
IN CONTRAST to a muslim preacher who believes it is ok to hit your wife, BECAUSE THE KORAN SAYS ITS OK TO HIT YOUR WIFE

 

Sahih Bukhari . Sahih translates to authentic or correct. The Sunni Muslims believe the Bukhari hadiths are the most authentic and second only to the Koran that says-

[4.34] Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.

 

And the hadieths are the only insite into the religion, without them, the religion evaporates.

 

The problem is this: Muslims can't muster the moral courage to condemn Mohammad for approving of beating women. Examples: 1. Qur'an 4:34. 2. Mohammad also struck Aisha.

 

I think if this "Allah" was actually real, that he'd care about people (especially Muslims, which he loves more than the rest of us) ENOUGH to actually come down and tell us what the actual truth is...SHOULD men beat women, or should men NOT beat women? As it stands now we're confused, but apparently men CAN beat women, at least according to the Islamic texts.
