Hello, i a currently a commerce student taking a side course in political science. In this course i will be graded on a debate i preform against one of my fellow classmates. But the debate topic i received is much more challenging then i expected.

To get to the point, I need help finding valid arguments on why Canada should keep its current electoral system. Thank you for the response and remember that any help is good help for me.

I for one don't think Canada should keep it's current electoral system. It's not a fair representation of the electoral college. In the 2011 election the Green Party held nearly 4% of the vote yet they were represented with less than .5%. The conservatives held a majority government but only had 39% of the vote.

One valid argument could be that small segments of the population of Canada have certain opinions that are so against the basic Canadian mentality and world view that there is no real need for their idea to be given a greater voice.

For example a segment of the population of Canada want to see Canada under Sharia law and although their beliefs are sincere, and although the proponents of this plan do believe that this would make Canada a better place to live in, I have to admit that my view is in line with the majority that Sharia law clashes with basic democratic values in many important areas.

For example, the Burka, was designed in a time period when if a poor man had an exceptionally beautiful wife, that poor man would likely be killed and his wife taken from him unless she disguised her beauty.

The situation in Canada in 2015 is very different than the atmosphere in the Middle East that the Burka was designed for.

This is certainly a valid point!

I have made a suggestion in posts #3 and #4 here that Canada's Green Party should discuss the printing up of a Green Party Volunteerism Hour like the Ithaca Hour.

The fact that the Green Party has such a high level of support among Canadians would indicate that that an experiment of that nature organized through the Green Party could have a great deal of support. Ten USA States are discussing the printing up of State currencies and encouraging local governments to initiate local currencies like the Ithaca Hour or Calgary Dollars.
