Cat Lost on Vacation Travels 190 Miles Home By Alyssa Newcomb | ABC News Sun, Jan 13, 2013 2:26 PM EST A cat with an extraordinary sense of direction managed to find her way home after becoming separated from her owners while on vacation. In November, Jacob and Bonnie Richter brought their cat, Holly, along on a road trip to the Daytona International Speedway, 190 miles from their home in West Palm Beach, Fla. Spooked by fireworks one night, Holly bolted from the Richters' motor home. For days, her frantic owners handed out flyers and alerted local agencies, before they finally headed home, distraught and without Holly. Fast forward 62 days to when Barb Mazzola found an emaciated cat in her Palm Beach Gardens yard. "She was so skinny, all bones and weak and she could hardly walk," Mazzola said. She bought the feline food and took her to a veterinarian on Saturday, where Holly was scanned for a microchip. The Richters got the shock of their lives when they got the call that Holly had been found, and only one mile from their home. "It was quite a journey for this little girl," Jacob Richter told ABC News affiliate WPBF-TV. "We just can't believe she came home." For Holly, an inside cat, to clock 190 miles by herself is nothing short of a miracle, said Marty Becker, a veterinarian. "All animals have a sense of direction, but it's really unusual for cats to find a way home over long distances," he said. I think this is somewhat of a miracle. I am surprised that Holly even wanted to return to the Richters after being taken to the Daytona Speedway and being freaked out by all those rednecks and fireworks. But apparently she loved the Richters and considered them her family, so she made her way back to within 1 mile of their home. The vet says that for an inside cat, Holly did well to travel 190 miles and calls it a miracle. I am sure the Richters welcomed Holly back and fed her all her favorite foods, and scratched all her favorite spots...
You bet they are! They have intelligence and sharp instincts/senses that would be nice for humans to have.... A co-worker told me about her cat, Striper, when they lived in CA and planned on moving up her. Her husband said he'd buy a plane ticket for their dog, but not the cat, so put the cat up for adoption..... there was no changing his mind, so Kay called friends who lived in the country 50 miles south and were told to bring Striper, so they did...... 2-3 days later, Kay heard a 'MEOW!' at the door, opened it and it was Striper! Kay said "Hey, Jack! Guess who's back!" After he got over his shock, Jack let out a loud "Meow! and said he was not going to buy a plane ticket for a cat. Kay called friends who lived 50 miles north of them in the country. She called, they said 'ok' and took Striper north. 2-3 days later, a "MEOW!" at their door - there was Striper, tired and hungry and pist off that he had been left behind again. Kay shouted "Hey, Jack! Guess who's back!" Jack looked at Striper, who was glaring back at him, groaned and said 'fine. Guess I'll buy a plane ticket for you too"....... Striper had a good life up here and after 18 yrs of letting Kay, Jack and kids know who was the boss, she peacefully went to cat heaven...... Cats & dogs make great companions......
Did you guys notice this ?: When I first read the title of the thread and saw who the OP was, I thought to myself that maybe she's attempting to offer an olive branch for all the threads she starts always refering to gun owners as KKK members, white supremacists etc. Looks like she really has it in for anyone living in the south too.
Agreed! I have a dog and have had a dog most of my life. They are the best companions, never judging you and love you unconditionally. I remember a few years back a person that used to live here ( i will not say who ) let the dog run out the door (though he may not have noticed) about 2 hours later I opened the door to go to my car and there was Max! sitting on the front step waiting. I was shocked of course because I had no idea he was even outside. Let alone without a leash. He could have easily wandered or even ran away to chase something but he stayed. Cats and dogs are extremely loyal, though I would say dogs make the best companions.
Montoya: u sed: "dogs make the best companions" .... I thought so too until I got a cat. My MinPin was hyper, hated to left alone, would fly after big dogs etc. where my cat is quiet, has his own personality, and is not really as dependent on humans as dogs are.
Don't take your cat to NASCAR events! This is simply common sense, of which these people seem in short supply.
just for that i had to post here photo.. shes a little chunky dont you all think making fun of others in the south?
You can't compare a miniature pincher to a cat! I know someone who has one of those dogs and as much as I love dogs, I would not have one. They're to hyper.... but they are smart. Once a kitten becomes cat, they become more mellowed out and have an independent nature. You can leave them alone for the w/e as long as they have their litter box, food and water, but you can't a dog....
