Which is the better pet? For me the answer to this question is obvious. Dogs by far are the better pets. I've never met a cat that respected me, let alone love and care about me. Dogs are different, even my friends' dogs love me. They are just so much more approachable and friendly creatures. I like to think of it like this, dogs have owners, cats have staff.

Depends on your personality and the animal's personality. Most people are loved by dogs--they are dog people. Some people are loved by cats--they are cat people. Some are loved by both.

I'm a dog person, and cats can take me or leave me. That said, I also get along better with some types of dogs than others. For the most part, I don't get along well with bird dog breeds--labradors, pointers, spaniels. I get along well with herding and working dog breeds (shepherds, collies, boxers).

That said, I currently have two cats and a boxer dog. It's a wierd relationship. The dog prefers humans to the cats, but gets along fine with the cats. The cats prefer the dog to humans, but get along fine with humans. We like them all, but realize the dog likes us better than the cats do. However, for cats, they like us about as much as I've ever seen cats like non-cat people. We had cats a few years ago. they outright disliked us.

Not being "That guy", but it really depends on what you're looking for in an animal companion.

A dog will love any good master. A cat's love has to be earned. :D

I like both. I was always a dog person as a kid. I liked cats but my dog was my buddy. Cats can be very affectionate and loving pets. But it takes a different approach. Dog people often treat cats like dogs, and that doesn't work.

At this point, a dog would be too demanding of time and attention. With my work and no wife, I need animals that are more independent. So I have two kitties... and they think I am the greatest man on earth. :D

Cats smell bad, serve no security purpose, don't play much, expect attention and do not reciprocate, and are evil Satan spawn awaiting your demise.

Other than that they are neat.

No they don't. Not if you know how to take care of them.

Only if you aren't nice to them.

Obviously dogs are better. It's not even a fair comparison. You should have asked "Cats or smallpox?" so cats would have a chance.

Not only are dogs friendlier, but you can see pure love in their eyes. When you look into a cat's eyes it's just a cold bottomless pit that sucks your life force from you.

I think that depends on the animal. I've had plenty of cats that ADORED me. :) They are just more independent creatures is all.

Cats should not have any smell at all. If your cat smells, then it is probably sick.

I've taken feral cats and made them into great pets. It just takes a lot of love.

It's funny but animals understand when you save them. You will find nothing more loyal and loving.

Only time I wasn't fond of cats was when I had to bathe them. If I heard...you have 5 cat baths today. I knew the day wasn't going to be a chill one. Id rather take blood from a pit bull.

They both are great as pets. My cat cracks me up, hes so sweet and yet can be such a prick. lol

I've had many of both, usually at the same time. Cats consider themselves the masters of their domain and generally do as they please, but are suckers for petting by the hands that feed it.

dogs respond to you and demand far more attention and care. Had to board the dog, but with cats could leave bowls of food, a couple of litter boxes and water (toilet seat up for emergency supply) and leave for up to a week or so.

Lifestyle and budget I guess. Cats are cheaper than dogs.

I rescued a mother and her 5 kittens left in a cardboard box in the gutter the right before a snowstorm. Their eyes were not even open yet and mom was imatiated.....they all lived. Four of the kittens found good homes and the runt stayed with mom and my mom to this day.
I actually like cats and was making a joke.....but, I like dogs much more.

I like both cats and dogs. In fact, I like pretty much all animals. I would even have a pet goat or a pet pig if I could! I've heard pigs are actually very clean and very intelligent animals. Those little pigs are really cute.

Lol! I was just kidding around. Every one of my friend's cats have been a little . . . crazy. I think it's how she plays with them. She is too rough, so they think that's okay.

You don't have to bathe cats. They clean themselves very well. They should be very, very clean animals and have no scent. Unless they've been sprayed by a skunk or got into something that might harm them if they lick it off, or if they are one of those hairless cats, you don't have to bathe them. Most cats do not like baths, and they don't like being in water either.

Imo the obvious answer (dogs are better) begs an obvious corollary question:
If dogs are so much better, why are there so many pet cats?
