July 1st marks 100 years since the start of the Battle of the Somme in World War One.

19,000 British soldiers were killed on the first day of this battle.

This was a pointless battle in a pointless war.

Worse yet, the "peace" settlement of World War One led directly to World War Two.

In my younger days I served in the military (Royal Air Force) but as I have witnessed pointless wars over time (Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and now Syria) I have become more and more of a pacifist.

The flower of British youth was crushed in that battle.
