July 1st marks 100 years since the start of the Battle of the Somme in World War One. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-36674451 19,000 British soldiers were killed on the first day of this battle. This was a pointless battle in a pointless war. Worse yet, the "peace" settlement of World War One led directly to World War Two. In my younger days I served in the military (Royal Air Force) but as I have witnessed pointless wars over time (Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and now Syria) I have become more and more of a pacifist.
