UNGUWAR YANSORO, Nigeria, Nov. 28 (UPI) --

A 14-year-old child bride is being tried in a Nigerian courtroom on charges that she killed her 35-year-old groom and three others with rat poison.

The girl, Wasila Tasi'u, allegedly asked a young sister of one of her husband's co-wives to buy the poison just hours before she prepared a meal to celebrate her two-week marriage. Groom Umar Sani had several wives, said officials.

Tasi'u "said rats were disturbing her in her room," the 7-year-old girl testified.

A neighbor, also invited to the meal, decided not to continue eating the food when he noticed "sandy-like particles, black in color" and told the judge in the girl's hearing that he "was not comfortable with the taste; it was only Umar who continued eating."

Tasi'u sobbed at her first court appearance and the judge in Gezawa High Court in northern Nigeria entered a plea of not guilty on her behalf. He rejected her lawyer's request that she be tried in a juvenile court system. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against her.

The case has infuriated international human rights activists who say child brides should be considered victims, not criminals.

Child brides are common in northern Nigeria. Thirty-nine percent of all Nigerian girls are married before they turn 18.

Different countries - different customs. At least the bride wasn't 8 years old!
Do they in Nigeria marry their wives for love or for continuous sex and slavery?
At least here in our western world we marry for love! It may not last a lifetime, but at least we start out loving each other.

I say, the girl should be forgiven and go free. She is not a criminal. Perhaps she wanted to end the pain and avoid his bad breath!
Or she didn't want to get pregnant right away. Who knows what her motivation to get rid of him was.
    What says the forum?

So sad. Sometimes in these cases there is not really any good thing to do.
The girl murdered her husband... but the act is almost understandable, considering her circumstances.

Of course, the issue is not merely just about the phenomena of child marriages, but rather the poverty that leads many parents to sell off their daughters in marriages—whether the young daughter will be happy or not.

I wonder how many cows or chicken Umar gave to the parents as payment?
Those lives and circumstances are so far removed from ours, it is hard to believe it exists on the same planet. BUT....
in our society we have the sex trade and sex enslavement. It's illegal, therefore flourishes underground.
We even have a Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers.
There are problems and ugly stuff everywhere.

I think the Human Rights activists should slam the practice of child marriages, and not the child.

This thread is a good example to how corrupt human rights groups are. Apart from this, it is dishonest, if not arrogantly racist, to judge those people with our western standards. Why does everyone think that the western standards should be superior automatically, everywhere in the world? Most western bullies don't even know what the word marriage means outside their western cultures.

For nearly all of human history and most of USA history most brides were under 18.

Nature is ready to reproduce as soon as the girls get their period.
We are part of the food chain, we are part of the animal world!!
BUT... we humans have the capacity to develop our brains, so we can reason and make changes.
I never forget the story of Dr. Semmelweiss, who discovered the GERMS. What a difference that made!!!

We have become an educated society.
That didn't happen simultaneously around the globe.
    Habits and traditions die hard.
And then there are the "Lords", who own everything! There are not enough hours in the day one poor father can work to feed his 10 or more children.
When people are so poor then there is not much else they can do.
