Records: Veteran had been in mental hospital
Feb 4,`13 -- The Iraq War veteran charged with killing a former Navy SEAL sniper and his friend on a Texas shooting range had been taken to a mental hospital twice in the past five months and told authorities he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, police records show.

Eddie Ray Routh, 25, also told his sister and brother-in-law after the shootings that he "traded his soul for a new truck," according to an Erath County arrest warrant affidavit obtained by WFAA-TV. Police said Routh was driving the truck of victim and ex-Navy SEAL Chris Kyle at the time of his arrest. Routh is charged with one count of capital murder and two counts of murder in the shooting deaths of Kyle, author of the best-selling book "American Sniper," and his friend Chad Littlefield at a shooting range Saturday in Glen Rose. He is on suicide watch in the Erath County Jail, where he's being held on $3 million bail, Sheriff Tommy Bryant said.

Routh, a member of the Marines Corps Reserve, was first taken to a mental hospital Sept. 2 after he threatened to kill his family and himself, according to police records in Lancaster, where Routh lives. Authorities found Routh walking nearby with no shirt and no shoes, and smelling of alcohol. Routh told authorities he was a Marine veteran who was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. "Eddie stated he was hurting and that his family does not understand what he has been through," the report says. Routh's mother told police her son had been drinking and became upset when his father said he was going to sell his gun. She said Routh began arguing with them and said he was going to "blow his brains out."

Police took Routh to Green Oaks Hospital for psychiatric care. Dallas police records show Routh was taken back to the same mental hospital in mid-January after a woman called police and said she feared for Routh's safety. Green Oaks will not release patient information, citing privacy laws. Most people brought by police to the hospital are required to stay at least 48 hours.In another brush with authorities, Lancaster police in May responded to a burglary reported by Routh's mother that included nine pill bottles. Police say Routh was involved but no other details were available. Authorities say Routh, Kyle and Littlefield arrived at the sprawling Rough Creek Lodge about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, and a hunting guide called 911 about two hours later after discovering the bodies. Kyle and Littlefield were shot multiple times, and numerous guns were at the scene, according to the affidavit.

Routh drove to his sister's house, and told her he had killed two people and that he planned to drive to Oklahoma to evade Texas authorities, the affidavit said. Routh's sister then called police, and he was arrested after a short police pursuit in Lancaster. Jailers used a stun gun on Routh on Sunday night after he appeared ready to assault them when they entered his cell after he refused to return his food tray, the sheriff said. Then they put Routh in a chair that restrains his arms and legs in his solitary confinement cell, Bryant said. Bryant said Routh has an attorney but hasn't met with him at the jail in Stephenville, about 75 miles southwest of Fort Worth. Attempts by The Associated Press to reach Routh's mother and sister were unsuccessful Monday.

Suicide watch

After using the stun gun once, prison officials put the accused in a chair that restrains the arms and legs. He is said to be on suicide watch after the incident. Mr Routh has been charged on two counts of murder and is being held on $3m (£1.9m) bail. The shootings occurred on Saturday afternoon at the Rough Creek Lodge range. The gunman then fled in a pick-up truck belonging to one of the victims, local media reported. A hunting guide found the bodies of Kyle and his neighbour, Chad Littlefield.

Sheriff Bryant said Mr Routh then travelled to his sister's home, telling her what had happened before leaving. She called the police and Mr Routh was arrested several hours later near his home in Lancaster, Texas, more than 70 miles (110 km) from the crime scene. Sheriff Bryant said the motive for the killings was unclear, but noted: "It's my understanding that the suspect may have been suffering from some type of mental illness from being in the military himself."

'The Devil'

Travis Cox, director of a non-profit organisation Kyle had helped found, told the Associated Press news agency that Mr Routh was suffering from PTSD and that Kyle and Littlefield were trying to help him. "Chris died doing what filled his heart with passion - serving soldiers struggling with the fight to overcome PTSD," Mr Cox said. Littlefield was Kyle's "work-out buddy" and volunteered his time with the veterans, Mr Cox said. Scott McEwen, who co-authored the book with Kyle, said: "It just comes as a shock and it's staggering to think that after all Chris has been through, that this is how he meets his end, because there are so many ways he could have been killed."

Kyle, a former cowboy, is regarded as the most prolific sniper the US has ever seen. Official Pentagon figures say he killed 160 people, but he estimated the total was 255. According to military intelligence, he was nicknamed the Devil by Iraqi insurgents, who put a $20,000 (£13,000) bounty on his head. "Every person I killed I strongly believe that they were bad," he told the BBC in an interview a year ago. "When I do go face God there is going to be lots of things I will have to account for, but killing any of those people is not one of them."

I watched him in a video.. he was a big decent hunk of a man.. Seemed happy with his wife and kids. Someone you would like and trust.

Memorial for Chris Kyle held in Dallas Cowboys stadium...

About 7,000 attend memorial for slain Navy SEAL sniper
February 11, 2013 - About 7,000 attended a memorial service Monday at Cowboys Stadium for Chris Kyle, the former Navy SEAL sniper who was slain last week near Glen Rose.

At about 11:30 a.m., parking lots filled up quickly for the 1 p.m. service at the 80,000-seat stadium. I stand before you a broken woman, Kyles wife, Taya, tearfully told the crowd. Chris Kyle was all in no matter what he did in life. After revealing her flaws to her husband, Taya Kyle said Chris told her: Youre a package deal. I love you. All of you. At the beginning of the service, the crowd entered slowly into the stadium with the hymn ``Mansions of the Lord playing on the P.A. system and images of Chris Kyle on the jumbo screen. Serenaded by Scottish bagpipes, the casket carrying Kyle was placed on the blue star on the 50-yard line. A photo montage showed moments of Kyles life from his childhood through adulthood.

Dozens of Navy SEALS, past and present, stood as the SEAL creed was read at the memorial. One-by-one, boyhood friends and fellow military members paid tribute to Kyle. At home, he wasnt Superman. He was just a dad, one of Kyles high school friends said. Some of the speakers were not identified in the program. At the close of the service, country star Randy Travis sang ``Whisper My Name then led the crowd in a rendition of ``Amazing Grace.

No politicians spoke at the service, however, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin posted on her Facebook page that she and her husband, Todd, were planning to attend the memorial. I find it sad to see that flags arent flying at half staff for this American hero, Palin wrote on the page. Kyle, co-author of the book ``American Sniper, will be buried in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin on Tuesday. The Patriot Guard Riders have announced that they will escort the hearse from Arlington to Austin. Nancy Clayton, office manager of Midlothian Funeral Home, which is handling arrangements, said Kyles family will have a private funeral separate from the public memorial service.

The three had gone there to practice shooting in the hopes it would be good therapy for Routh, a troubled veteran with a history of mental illness. Authorities believe that Routh, 25, shot both men multiple times with a semiautomatic handgun before fleeing in Kyles pickup truck. Local veterans and mental health experts praised Kyle for his good intentions, but some questioned his methods. That is not really therapy, and it is very dangerous, said Dr. Darshan Singh Sehbi, a Dayton psychiatrist who has worked extensively with returning war veterans. When you bring the veteran to the firing range, he could start reliving his past. A flashback could be triggered.

David Meiring, 45, a Dayton Army vet with post-traumatic stress disorder, said its difficult to draw conclusions from the tragedy. I know the guy was trying to do the right thing, he said, but thats kind of risky if you know someone is troubled. Going to the shooting range can be therapeutic for some vets, but you should get to know someone before doing that. You never know what someones triggers might be whether its the smell of gunpowder or the firing of a gun. Something like that could have set him off.

According to published reports, Kyle did not know Routh well, but he did know his mother, Jodi Routh, who had recently asked him to help her son, a former Marine who had released from the Dallas V.A. Medical Center just days before the shooting. Routh is currently being held in the Erath County Jail in Stephenville, Texas, on $3 million bond.

Meiring is a mechanic who is unable to work because of his PTSD. He attends a weekly veterans support group at the Dayton V.A. Medical Center. Friends and family and support groups really helped me the most, and sometimes you need to talk to a professional about this stuff, he said. You need all of it. Without the whole chain you are missing a link, and thats when you fall through. Meiring commends Kyle for trying to give back: He was paying it forward. Sehbi said that people should not shy away from helping veterans as a result of this tragedy, but they should use sound judgment.
