Hong Kong's last governor, Chris Patten, has delivered a stinging rebuke to local independence advocates, saying their behaviour risks diluting support for the broader democracy movement and the moral high ground gained during the 2014 Umbrella Movement.

Speaking at the Foreign Correspondents' Club about the world after Brexit and the election of Donald Trump as US president, Patten quickly turned his attention to affairs in the city he governed for five years until the handover in 1997.

...Patten said taking oaths was a serious business, not "something of a lark". He said it was "perfectly reasonable" to bar those who would not take an oath from taking their place in the legislature. And Patten said it was mistaken to confuse Hong Kong people's concern for their rights and freedoms and how that affected their prosperity and well-being with some "headline-grabbing" remarks on independence.

Speaking to reporters after the event, Patten said he would much prefer if Chinese officials were having to discuss the "answerable case" for greater democracy in Hong Kong rather than the "very unwise" case for independence. (End excerpts)

Maybe our dream gal has something to say about it?
