Religious murder has continued for 2000 years. The Crusades, the Inquisitions, Witch killings, Bush's lies to gain support for an invasion of the middle east, etc etc etc. I'm sick and tired of religion...all religion. I don't give a damn what possesses a fanatic...I despise them all. The world was better off when the pagan gods were running things:
*irony on* Sure, under these pagan Gods people never went to war and of course proper human sacrifices are preferable to just having a wafer instead. *irony off*
You really should thank God you live in a Christian majority nation. You'd be in sad shape even when living in societies that rant against religion as much as you do. Perhaps it is not a bad idea to count your blessings and appreciate what allows you to mindlessly rant without fear. Atheism for the most part is parasitic...thriving in tolerant religious societies that Atheism itself can't seem to create.
Maybe the OP should move to Saudi Arabia or another country with a majority of Muslims and complain about Islam as he does Christianity!
No, its never entered my head to throw kids into a bog to appease the Gods, like my Germanic ancestors did. Nor am I a proponent of substitutionary atonement, if thats what you mean. IMHO its based on rather similar notions. What I hold instead is the moral influence view of the atonement, that teaches that the purpose and work of Jesus Christ was to bring positive moral change to humanity. This moral change came through the teachings and example of Jesus, the Christian movement he founded, and the inspiring effect of his martyrdom and resurrection. It is one of the oldest views of the atonement in Christian theology and a prevalent view for most of Christian history ( ) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atonement_(moral_influence_view) I suppose to a degree such moral change is responsible for Christianized Europe - which of course was for the most part no less barbaric than it was before - building its first hospitals etc. So yeah, all in all I dont think wed be better off under the Norse Gods.
Don't forget that the original Christian health care plan consisted of the elders getting together over the sick person, putting their hands on him, anointing him with special oil and praying for his recovery. The magic pool at Bethesda had limited capacity.
"Irony On"....God is the biggest cause of human death, and the proposed reason for love.\ The Irony will never be turned "Off" until we grow up as a species.
Dont forget that humankinds knowledge on medicine improved vastly under Islam and with delay finally also made it to our shores thanks to the Christian monks who translated the Muslim writers works and developed them even further.
I believe that without God we would not even exist as a species, nor would any life, planet, space, time ...
You are free to "believe" anything you wish, you are not free however to expect those who live in reality and this world to accept it as truth. When anyone simply makes a claim that is a bot strange and cannot produce evidence to back it up...it is natural to call it out as false. None of you have ever shown anything even remotely convincing to a logical mind when asked for evidence of this "God" entity. But this is acceptable because we all know you cannot.
Pagan gods had caused a lot of wars also. The problem we have now is to a lesser degree wars caused by religion, but wars caused by nationalistic tendencies. 200 years ago, wars were not fought between peoples, they were fought by armies. Now you have people X attacking people Y. That's the problem! If you read up about when and why nationalism came around, you'll see that all wars became more extreme. If asked, I'll explain it as well, but religion is not the be all and end all of problems or wars.
Well... let's try this one. Please produce for me a piece of magnetic field. Submit it to the forum for all to review and analyze.
I most certainly did. And, I STILL think he should move to one of those nations that do not tolerate anyone who speaks against their religion.
The muslim scientific advances were made by Jewish collaborators. Desert dwelling nomadic Arabs didn't have a clue.
Not true... In Muslim Spain Jewish scholars worked alongside Muslim scholars to translate from the Greek and Latin into Hebrew and Arabic.
