Venezuela, one of the richest countries in the world, sitting on the worlds largest oil reserve, is swimming in poverty because the govt, rather than free people, are in charge of the resources..

The examples from history are endless. When will the left open it's eyes and see the obvious...

Free people are better at operating a country than centralized govt authorities. 5000yrs of precedent..

Socialism is a great example of failure. Right now, the left wing thinks it's brilliant. They also complain about the current rich elitist 1%ers (which coincidentally they want to make President....lol). However, all Socialism does is create a new breed of rich elitists and a severely poor populous.

    Bloomberg drew this conclusion about Chavez;
"But in terms of basic macroeconomic management Hugo Chavez has to go down as one of the most disastrous leaders the world has seen quite in a while."

Pretty depressing state of affairs down there. And, even if Maduro gets ousted it'll take years to bring back any sort of stability & restore relations with investors.

If the left was honest, they would admit it is the peasants who are attracted to socialism.

Peasants, "the poor," the disenfranchised; they see socialism as a way to better their life. Leftists play on this wish, but one of the reasons socialism is not generally accepted in the U.S. is because there is an equal opportunity for the poor to work their way to the middle class. At least it used to be; politicians from both parties, with NAFTA and other "free" trade treaties, have been eliminating the middle class the poor strives for.

Also, it's worth noting peasants are often attracted to personality cults; see Chavez, Castro, Obama.

Sadly, we're seeing this personality cult with Trump; not looking good for our future, the corrupt Hilary or the nut job Donald...

Actually, local government (and sometimes a state government) does fantastic work in making our small towns and suburbs great places to live. It's the large, central government that tries to control our economy and redistribute our property and income in the name of social justice that does little right...

Some states. California, for example, is simply a smaller version of the centrally controlled federal government, with the same cronyism and corruption one finds at the federal level.

the reality is, those local towns/municipalities, without oversight would become corrupt in an instant. it happens even today with modest oversight.

This is true in large urban cities, but generally the closer the decision-makers are to the people who elect them, the better government runs.

Not so. States compete with one another for business investment, etc. Where there is competition, there are always better options, as if you don't like it where you are you can always pick up and move. You don't have that option at the Federal level, therefore the Feds feel no need to satisfy consumer demands for more fair government. Why would they, you've go nowhere to go.

greenspace is what we could have more of, if we placed more infrastructure underground. electrical power is one example.

States still have their own social safety nets; we have our current regime of federal assistance to States.

Would Venezuela have a problem with agriculture, if they used socialism to socialize a few score of these?

Why not Norway? A similar "socialist" country with vast oil reserves?
Oh right. They are among the richest and beat "capitalist" USA in every field.

And why is that? Why are the large population areas controlled by "leftists"?
