This was posted after the opening ceremony. Should Michael Phelps not have carried the flag? Or is this just a plea for political correctness?

CNN host says Michael Phelps shouldn’t carry US flag, but a ‘Muslim’ should . . . Americans are furious
    August 7, 2016 | Michael Dorstewitz | Print Article

Liberals wanted U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps to give up the honor of carrying the American flag and leading his country’s athletes at the opening ceremony for the Rio Olympic games Friday night.

He’s the wrong color and the wrong sex.

After Phelps was chosen by his fellow Olympians, the U.S. Olympic Team tweeted:

But coming in a close second to Phelps in the team’s vote was Ibtihaj Muhammad, a woman, an African-American and a Muslim to boot.

What could be better, some thought. Diversity, you know.

Leading the pack of naysayers was W. Kamau Bell, host of CNN’s “United Shades of America.” In a CNN op-ed, he described the swimming sensation as a “tall, successful, rich white guy” who clearly didn’t “need the honor.”

“With 22 Olympic medals, you are already the most decorated athlete in Olympic history,” he said.

But American fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad is a different story.

“Muhammad carrying the flag would be much bigger than your one moment,” Bell writes. “It would be a symbol for our country in this moment when we are mostly known for one of the most contentious, controversial, scandal-ridden, hateful, xenophobic, jingoistic, and just generally unlikable presidential elections in recent memory. This is at a time when we could use some more symbols of unity and togetherness.”

Bell referred to Muhammad as “a one-stop inclusion shop due to her race, sex and religion. Phelps, on the other hand was something else entirely.

“No offense, but right now America has enough tall, successful, rich white guys hogging the spotlight trying to make America great,” he said, in an obvious reference to Donald Trump.

Bell concluded by saying that Phelps’ stepping aside in favor of Muhammad was already a done deal.

“Again, thank you again for stepping aside for Ibtihaj Muhammad,” he wrote. “During these Olympics, you can win more medals to add to your all-time winning number of medals. But no medal will compare to making room for this.”

He was wrong on that one. Phelps carried the flag and led the delegation of American athletes at the opening ceremony.

So there we have it. Affirmative action should be adopted by the U.S. Olympic Committee — at least according to Bell. America took issue with this.

Michael Phelps won the men's 200-meter butterfly final for the 20th Olympic gold medal of his career. I was watching a live telecast with my brand new 24-inch TV just an hour ago and he had a lot of American flags on his cap and headsets.

As an avowed "liberal," I don't think there's any real question that Phelps should carry the flag. He's a national treasure and deserves the honor.

His openness about how his life was turned around can also give hope and inspiration to hundreds and thousands
of others who are caught in a place much like where he was just a few years ago.

It is great that he carried the flag.

This is not enough! The next person to carry flag needs to be a Black, female, Muslim, transgender---assuming their Muslim families don't kill them first.

The honor should go to the best of the best we have, the leader, the champion. It should have nothing to do with your personal life. The greatest athlete of the period gets the honor, it's not there for a PC move.

there was absolutely no question that he should have carried the flag. it was his first opening ceremony and (according to him) his last Olympics. he's done what NO athlete of any race gender nationality sexual orientation etc has done. he's the most decorated Olympian of all time and if anyone deserves the honor its him. America has become pathetic on how it makes absolutely everything into more than it is. they make everything racial and sexual and where it must be "politically correct" which really doesn't even exist it's just an excuse to hate anyone who has worked their ass off, achieved goals or isn't a minority. it's absolutely absurd. phelps deserved the honor. there is no valid argument against it.
