Evangelicals, also known as the Republican base, have been terrorizing trick-or-treaters for years by giving them booklets telling them they will go to hell unless they join the Evangelical movement.

These booklets, sold in 25-count boxes for $4.00 by a company called Chick Publications, are dropped in the Halloween bags of young children, often taped to candy.

They appear to be harmless little comic books. A smiling witch is on the cover along with the words “Happy Halloween.” But impressionable youngsters may be disturbed by what's inside.

The story is about two boys whose friend Timmy was hit by a car and killed. Bobby and his mother take solace in the notion that Timmy went to heaven because he was a good person.

Mrs. Baxter, the Sunday school teacher tells them they are wrong: “Don't make the mistake of believing that good people go to heaven and bad people go to hell. That's a lie straight from the devil.”

She tells them that Timmy, who dropped out of Sunday school, will spend eternity in hell.

Should young children be subjected to this? Should this kind of thing even be legal? People have gone to jail for putting less harmful things into trick-or-treat bags!

Check out the ethnically diverse group of smiling people at the top of the web page and the line “Everyone loves Chick tracts!”

As reprehensible as it is, it's free speech and should definitely be legal.

I had some evangelical across the street neighbors. They had two bowls of Halloween treats--one of Chick tracts, the other of candy. The kids they knew got candy. the other kids got tracts. They accidentally gave my son tracts, but also gave him candy. He couldn't read at the time, so we took the tracts from his candy bucket, and read them, laughed, and threw them away.

By the way, I am a conservative and am not evangelical. Most conservatives I know are not evangelicals. The evangelicals have pretty much abandoned the Republican party, which is the reason Romney lost so badly.

Honestly I couldn't care less about evangelicals. They and their backwards philosophy and rot in hell for all I care.

Conservatives pass out literature that makes Halloween scarier.

Liberals ban people from dressing up like witches because it's offensive to witches.

    The moral here?

Conservatives throw way better Halloween parties. 8)

Jack Chick has always been a cut above when it comes to downright crazy. Even though the concept has been morphed since its origins, it actually is a Christian celebration of the ultimate victory on All Saints Day. The whole conservative = religious is just the usual pigeonholing that makes all Democrats = socialists. You should know by now the US is black and white, you can not have any shades of gray

Isn't Halloween supposed to be scary? I'm really not seeing a problem.

The only thing scarier than this is the liberal halloween bag made of hemp, flowers and sunshine it got dropped into.

Banning this would mean that the government would take the position that the evangelicals are wrong which it cannot do as it cannot be proven, and because government shouldn't meddle in religion. Therefore, this is okay. and as others have said, it adds to the spooky feeling.

Yes, but lets see what happens if an atheist drops booklets into the candy boxes of Christian children that says there is no god. Christians would be in an uproar, claiming that atheists are trying to brainwash their children and need to be banned from celebrating halloween.

My neighbors when I was a kid were very very Christian. They went around telling kids that Halloween was the Devil's birthday and that anyone who eats candy they get on Halloween will die and go to hell right after eating it.

    Totally agree.

You could make it even scarier if you passed out literature detailing how witches were treated by Christians in the middle ages. :D

I am a conservative and an evangelical (small 'e'). This has nothing to do with me. It is not biblical and completely incorrect. Don 't compare these people to people who have an understanding of the Bible and Christian beliefs.

But in fact, the title of the thread is correct. I do terrorize children. I am known as the spider lady. I cover the front of my house with spider webs and small spiders. Then, I have a 12 inch spider that comes down on the trick-or-treaters heads as I slowly open the door.

I'm a fundamental Christian...and those tracts are bad. Just bad. Born again Christians don't turn to Jesus because they fear hell. They turn to Jesus because they believe in Jesus as God's Son.

Those tracts would make me angry to find in my kids bucket.

Ultimately---parents need to check the candy and read the tracts.

Wait, you're known as the spider lady, but you're The12thMan....There's either some information that we're not getting or there's information we don't want to get.

The 12th man is a reference to football fans. There is 11 players on the field and the fans are the proverbial 12th man.

But according to the Bible, you still go to hell if you don't believe Jesus is God's son, so the hell factor is a good way of scaring people into believing.

Yeah, when I was a Christian, I always used the old King James Bible.

As for hell, my uncle used to always go on about the end of the world and how most people will burn in hell. He would really drill it into my head, so I really think it is a scare tactic even if many Christians don't believe it is.
