While Nordine was Moroccan and most likely Muslim, I don't think Islam was the cause for this attack.

Nordine basically just seemed like a perpetual troublemaker in terms of gun violations and drug charges.

It's quite possible that he had been sampling too much of his own product.

Marijuana is psychologically harmless to most people, but there are a few people whom it causes to be schizophrenic. Nordine could have been one of those people, and usually, people with that vulnerability have mental issues even before smoking up.
