Several people who were arrested last week as part of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ voter fraud crackdown were notified by official government entities they were eligible to vote, according to court documents and interviews.

The defendants told authorities they had no intention of committing voter fraud, according to affidavits, and in some cases were baffled by their arrests because counties had sent them voter registration cards and approved them to vote.

In court documents filed in five counties, most say at least one official government body — in most cases a local election supervisor — incorrectly indicated to them they could vote, including allowing them to register and sending them voter cards in the mail.

I know we've all be caught up in the story of our criminal former President, but this story is actually too funny to pass on.

Helluva investigation there, Governor Death. Sounds like your beef is with the elections officials here, not the voters. Also, I would certainly put arresting people for doing what their government said they could do squarely (roundly??) in the semi-fascist bucket. I expect a few lawsuits for false arrest when all this is over.....

I know this will devolve into a thread about allowing former felons to vote (and I'm pro that myself, regardless of crime, but not during their sentences), so fire away...

Who has ZERO as the over/under number on a single conviction with these 20 arrests??

Here ya go..... Old people voting requires SWAT and choppers in Ron DeSantis' Florida....

    SNIP
Attorney Larry S. Davis, who is representing one of the men arrested in Miami-Dade for free, said his client was arrested at 6 a.m. when a SWAT team banged on his door.

“He was in his underwear, and they would not let him get clothed before taking him to jail,” Davis said. “There were people in his backyard who were armed, and they used a helicopter. It disrupted the entire neighborhood very early in the morning.”
    ENDSNIP

Note, this is for casting a vote, not stealing classified documents....

    C'mon Florida, do better.....

De Santis using false arrests to rile up his base. Doesn't matter that the state told them they could vote. The only thing that righties will pay attention to his voter fraud being prevalent.

The county told them they could vote. Then they changed their minds and arrested them because the county made a mistake. That's a false arrest.

That's according to their statements, The facts have not come out yet. But they may have a point. I noticed this comment in the article, "“Washington received a voter registration form in the mail, filled it out and mailed it back to the Orange County Supervisor of Elections Office,” read an affidavit filed by authorities in Orange County court. “The Orange County Supervisor of Elections mailed him a voter card.”"

It's possible that actually happened, in which case it's a valid defense, but I question that story since in Florida the registrar's office doesn't mail voter registration forms unless they are requested. So who requested it?

    Might be a fun trial.

I was reading the Florida rules on false arrest. No surprise, they are a VERY high bar to achieve. This technically may NOT be a false arrest (by the letter of the law), but it seems clear the many defendants can make a case there was no "probable cause" for an arrest.

Not sure what that's called in Florida, but it seems not to be false arrest... I'm gonna stop with that particular phrase, but I still think many of these defendants are going to have legal claims ATEOTD...

Yeah, they issue a voter id, then arrest them. Now who is acting like a dictator.

I dunno... because I'm on the side the majority of Americans (and Floridians) are, yet again??

Do ex-Felons have to pay taxes on their post incarceration jobs??

    Then I win....

Who approved the voter registration? Will they be charged for letting criminals vote?

Probably because it makes the election workers in those counties seem incompetent and best to put all the fraud on ex-cons. Imagine if this happened in a blue state...

One that, it needs to be remembered, won his governorship in 2018 with a WHOPPING 49.6% of the state vote, just 2500 votes over a man with major personal issues going on today....

The interesting thing about Charlie Crist is when he was governor, he was a Republican, back before they went extinct.... I wonder if voters will factor that in...

What? Arresting people who follow the directions of their government?? I'm afraid that's exclusively a red state phenomenon....

You're asking "who approved the voter registration" rather than asking who sent the voter registration form to his house? The answer to your specific question is easy, the Orange County Supervisor of Elections. Do they run a background check on every, or any voter? No they do not. You affirm that you are eligible to vote when you sign the form:

So if you lie on the form:

    upload_2022-9-1_20-32-45.png

The legal liability belongs to you, not to DeSantis or Trump or whoever you actually want to blame.

My original question still stands. You have to either fill out online a voter registration form, or print one off and mail it. So who mailed the voter registration form to him?

No. The county does verify if a person is eligible to vote. Who is in charge of Florida? Why is that person taking credit for eliminating voter fraud when they themselves are in charge of the architecture designed to prevent voter fraud?

It's funny you know. De Santis just admitted there was fraud in Florida. So naturally, is cyberninjas going to perform an audit? I was told a state needs to have 0% fraud to be considered valid. Oh wait, this state was won by Trump. Move along...

If the county does verify they have a defense, but my question still stands, who mailed the voter registration?
