I can always relate to those dealing with depression. I recently this summer lost a relative to suicide, as a result of his depression. Yes, I suffer from the silent epidemic.

In particular, my depression hits hardest in the fall because of 1. my birthday and 2. New Years. I don't even want to celebrate New Years anymore, like what's the use? And aging is the product of the devil. And my birthday is this month, damn it. To answer your questions in order:
    1. I take anti-depressants. If I don't take them, I feel it right away. Not only does the depression hit, but I also get irritable and rude to others.
    2. I feel like we have two choices, a revelation of sorts. We can either make it big in entertainment or business, or end life at 30, because in reality, everything goes downhill, both mentally and physically, from there. Being average, to me, is a life sentence in itself. It is a punishment, and no small thing in life could change that. Because we naturally undergo a transformation in our 20's, we might as well understand, and make the decision from this revelation. There are two choices, and two choices only, and those are the ones I just outlined.

I combine your, "Why bother? Aren't we all just going to die and turn to wormfood anyway?" in number 2 (no pun intended), because it really all falls in one question. We are all obligated, in one way or another, to leave a footprint in the earth when we return to the soil from which we came. Your spouse, your dog, your children, those are not enough. They are not means to an end. Sorry if I sound harsh, but I am putting a bigger picture out there everyone needs to realize. The easiest way to do this is to become a politician, a public servant of sorts. The hardest way is to create, and maintain a career in the liberal arts. A space in the middle is investing in real estate, and growing a empire. Or becoming an entrepreneur in a hot industry. To inspire, influence, and play a role in others lives is the best there is, participating in the rat race, and living a average life will not get you there. I'm sorry. Someone has to say it, and it had to be me. Even being a host on NBC News, appearing on national television 5-7 days a week, is much more than being a surgeon. I can't stress this enough when I say it is this that firmly believing in, and adhering to elitism is so important to everyday life.

Again, sincere apologies in advance if it sounded harsh, but it is ever-so-important, and so many people don't realize it.

    3. Depression is a result of wanting more. It is the fear of disappointing others, thus we try to fight it alone. I would argue it is the latter of your third question, that it is a part of a decadent first-world society. That society is a huge click like in high school, you have to fit in, or else you're considered the black sheep.

    4. Of course people in Africa get depressed. Depression is the silent, universal epidemic. It's not landlocked by any means.

    5. This is primarily me in saying this. Since there is no evidence that there is a god, yet I believe in some sort of higher power, everyone, even the highest of religious authorities, are not always happy. It is only human to be sad.

You are not weak to admit you suffer from depression. Read that again, you are not weak. In fact, it is a strength, not a weakness, and anyone who tells you otherwise is insecure with themselves, or unwilling to listen. I hope I provided some insight.

Vitamin D3 is the sunshine vitamin and is recommended by doctors. 4,000 IU daily, some take more in the winter.
I would try to walk 5 miles, jog 3 miles, or run 1 mile every day. Do it with other people to socialize and motivate you.

Move to Southern California, that will take care of the winter blues. Surfing in January is ideal.

Yeah I suffer from severe depression among other things. If you want to talk message me :)
I dont really see the point in anything, I am just aware of the expectations of me and how I am expected to act in certain situations and so I live up to those. I watch a lot of people and pick up on how I should feel or react and then I reciprocate those emotions and actions. I disagree about "depression is the self-indulgent of a decadent first-world society".

Do you have a dog? If not, get one. Get two so they don't get lonely when you're not home. They will get you outside of your head. Get some exercise daily. Then smoke a joint and watch something funny. Mindlessly funny, like mXc. The point is to enjoy yourself while you serve your time.

I do not really believe in depression. Most people that are depressed probably have some problem that they need to fix. And at some point people probably should be sad about certain things. It is not a bad thing to be sad. Modern society almost encourages this idea that people can never be unhappy. The movie Inside Out would be a good movie for a depressed person to watch. Sometimes you should feel sad. But at some point there is probably no looking on the bright side of things - like for some paraplegic people. A lot of people got upset about the recent movie where the paraplegic guy decides to kill himself because they thought that it was saying that disabled people should all kill themselves - but it is up to them isnt it? If they can be happy the way they are then good - but many would not be able to live like that - especially as a paraplegic - even with a hot girlfriend. I think there is a problem in modern society with celebrating disability with all this special olympics nonsense for example. Of course society should not make people feel bad about disability but society should not pretend that disability is not a bad thing because it most certainly is - so what we need to do is work to overcome disability through medical technology for the reason that it is bad - not good - so that no humans of the future have to suffer with disability. We should move away from this idea that disabled people can live a full life because there are things that they cannot do. And we should prevent the perpetuation of disability - for example we should not allow people with down syndrome to breed. If someone becomes disabled or is born with a disability that could not be screened for them that is a terrible thing and society should do everything to make sure this persons quality of life is as good as it can be - and we should work towards making a society where a droid will just replace your hand with a robot hand like in Star Wars - but we should not pretend that disability is something that should be celebrated. I know that the idea of special olympics is to celebrate the people that are living with disability and being positive about it - but in many ways it has become a celebration of disability itself and modern society does the same thing in many ways - which is why so many were outraged at the thought that it might be a good decision for an unhappy paraplegic to decide to end his life.

Depression is a mental state self imposed upon those who suffer it.

I would have agreed readily not too long ago and be completely dismissive, however after experiencing the effects of hormones balances in the body for myself, there are so many things that are dependent on your hormone's levels. Even my hair stopped being brittle, used to be in pain all the time, now essentially pain free except for what I incur at the gym, and the cold air of winter doesn't hardly effect me whereas it used to be debilitating.

    Life changing.

My wife has real issues with S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder). We have found Daylight Spectrum Bulbs in her daily work environment (we work from home) go a long way toward alleviating the worst of the symptoms.

Good for you mate - keep it up. Try going for long walks too because there's something therapeutic about it.

Yes, a proper doctor though, not a shrink.

I'm pleased you've made a recovery though GA. I've never been affected by depression before but my daughter went through it and happily came out the other side bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

Sometimes it's better to walk alone though; personally I wouldn't walk in company because I wouldn't want to keep having to think of stuff to talk about, and there would be very awkward silences. Mind you, my walks are between four and a half and five hours, so that would be a l-o-o-o-o-n-g silence??

That's very good advice to get an animal or 2. Those 4-legged critters can do a lot to help people, depressed or not. I understand that more nursing homes are allowing a cat in as a 'resident' b/c a cat curled up on the lap of a senior can be very soothing and comforting for the person.

I'm not much of a cat person, but I suppose they have their uses, too.

In Japan they have these robotic seal like creatures called Paro to keep company with the elderly.

I suffered from depression for years and didn't even know I had it. It always seemed to show itself in other ways, such as anger, fear, lost friendship, and self pity. When I almost lost my last job before retirement I finally went to a doctor. I never saw the doctor but a very good nurse prescribed Citalopram. She also gave ma a script for times when"I felt like jumping out of my skin" as a quick fix. Anyway my life improved dramatically. Even my coworkers noticed the improvement. Now I only take a pill every once in a blue moon. Don't let people tell you depression is your fault. It is a medical condition and an illness. Seek a medical professional... please. Life is worth living.
