Did I make a mistake waiting 40 years to watch the sequel to Star Wars?

I remember being really busy in 1980 and not keeping up with Star Wars after I heard a nasty rumour that Darth Vader is Luke's dad. That just sucks. I hate spoilers.

Now I've got some time and a massive special edition box set full of Ewan McGregor, I dont know where to start. Any suggestions?

Watch them all. Start with Episode 1, The Phantom Menace. If Jar-Jar hasn't made you end your own life, you've passed the test and can watch the rest.

Remember to watch in chronological order.

    Phantom Menace 1
    Attack of the Clones 2
    Revenge of the Sith 3
    A New Hope 4
    Empire Strikes Back 5
    Return of the Jedi 6
    Force Awakens 7
    The Last Jedi 8

Thanks for the tip. The timing is great for a marathon Star Wars session as I've come down with a cold, and lazing around watching Star Wars for the rest of the day is just what the doctor ordered :)

While I haven't watched them this way (I watched them as they were released), I've heard some say that the Machete order is the best way to watch them for the first time.

Basically, it's you watch Episode IV (the original), then Episode V (The Empire strikes Back), then you watch Episode II and III (and totally skip Episode I, which many Star Wars folks hate)), then watch Episode VI (Return of the Jedi). I would probably do a modified machete, and watch IV,V,I,II,III, VI, VII and totally skip the last movie, and add Rogue One. I haven't watched Solo, but it's on my to-do list.
