Star Wars, for over 3 decades, has had an established canon, with books approved by, and sometimes even published by George Lucas and his companies.

Most what what happened to Luke, Leia, Han Solo, and their children, has long since been established.

Luke married a former Dark Jedi named Mara Jade, and had a son named Ben.

Han and Leia married, and had two sons, Anakin and Jacen, and a daughter, Jana, Jacen's twin.

Jacen went on to become the new Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Caedus, in an attempt to save the galaxy (similar to his grandfather turning to the dark side out of fear of losing the ones he loved), and is killed by his sister, but not before realizing the error of his ways, and reaching out through the force to warn his former lover and his daughter of a threat against their lives.

I believe it was a bad move on Disney's part to simply announce all Star Wars canon as non-canon and create a new timeline.

If I had been in control, I would have all of the traditional characters alone and confirmed that the Expanded Universe was official canon, and created completely new characters for the new movies. Three new movies telling a new story with new charactes. It would take place around 1000 years afterr the end of the original trilogy. I would have had Mark Hammil appear as a "force ghost" version of Luke, who is met by the main character, but would otherwise leave all traditional characters out of the movie.

No, then everyone would know what the hell is going on, now good luck. The first movie set the stage the next two will hopefully do new things.
