I was just pondering the president's power to order US businesses to leave China when a thought occurred to me. If the president can order US businesses to leave a country against their will because he does not like the economic relationship between the US and that country, then he can also order them to stay there. If the can do that, he can also order US citizens to be in a country against their will to support those operations. In doing so, he can also force US citizens to abide by laws in a country that erode their constitutionally protected freedoms. As such, the power of the president starts to resemble the power of a king.

The American people need to decide whether they really want a king Trump.

You may be asking the wrong question.

Why did congress write laws permitting US corporations to move any of their parts to China in the first place?

How about when the steel companies announced they were raising prices? President Kennedy invited the CEO's to the White House and after that meeting the CEO's announced no price increase. Kennedy did it to help the USA. How about after WW2 the RR unions announced they were going on strike. President Truman told the RR'ers if they struck and crippled a recovering economy he would draft them into the Army and assign them to run the RR's. The unions didn't strike. Truman did it for the USA. Trump is trying to keep companies here or to return. He's doing it for the USA. Every president gets accused of trying to be a king. But they serve 4 years or 8 years and then the voters pick a new "king".

Just to make sure I understand, are you saying you don't have a problem with the president having the powers of a king because its only for four or eight years?

No I am asking the question that I want. That aside, when did Congress write a law saying that US businesses could not operate in China?

That may be so, but I don't know of any US law that forbade them from going there.

No one should want what could be construed as an imperial Presidency.

My post had an element of tongue-in-cheek but I guess I didn't choose the right words. Naturally I don't want a king or a dictator and I do want the president to follow the constitution. I'm OK with the president twisting some tails for the benefit of the USA. Remember Nixon found out what happens when a king breaks the law.

Trump has done nothing illegal. He hasn't disbanded Congress or the Supreme Court.

But if he issues a few Executive Orders that reverse what Obama did with Executive Orders, suddenly it's a "constitutional crisis".

    Liberals are illogical.

As in going to war without a declaration of war in Korea and Vietnam? The USA crossed the Rubicon more than 69 years ago.

With all the Constitutional powers congress has ceded to the presidency, it's a wonder congress has any power left. You see this especially when congress is controlled by the party as the president. Congress tried to give the president everything he wants along with any additional power. It's only when congress is controlled by the opposing party of the president that congress actually tries to check presidential power.

Simply put, those members of congress who are of the same party as the president are more part of the administration than the institution of congress.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think the POTUS has real power to force a company to leave a country.

At the time of the Revolutionary War only about 15% of “Americans” really opposed having a king. I’d guess the percentage is about the same today.

To answer the question - no, but we've got one who thinks he is.

Times have changed since Nixon was president. Now the president gets a list of people who are to be killed on that day without a trial and he signs off on it. Furthermore, if you have a fool making value judgements on what actually benefits the US, chaos will result. Time will tell.

He has the power to go what congress, the courts, and the people of the US let him get away with doing.

Last time Americans had a King, we gave him notice. Here in America we have a President.
    Weak strawman. Your idea.

Its certainly not for want of effort. Donald is trying really really hard. He just doesn't have the knack that King Richard did.

Sometimes I wish we didn't have a congress. A parliament system would be better.

Does Trump actually have that power? Isn't it possible he was virtue signalling?
