Do we put too much emphasis on a higher set of vocabulary?

I sometimes feel that people do not take certain issues seriously if a certain personage does not talk on a higher plane of intellect. For example: I find that in the vocation of being a pedagogue you cannot amass copious amounts of wealth. On the surface It sounds amazingly deep and complex, in reality I merely commented that teachers cannot make amazing amounts of money. If I had said instead "I think that teachers cannot make large amounts of money." It somehow sounds dumber and less intelligent. Do the words really matter, if you hide your meaning behind worthless words that are not concise and skew your meaning? Food for thought.
