We know how many undocumented aliens are here, because there are multiple agencies both public and private that count them, using various different scientific techniques that render the same result.

Obama closed the door on immigration more tightly than it has ever been at any point in our history.

Trump is going back to old techniques that failed to accomplish what Obama accomplished. And, a separate result is that Trump is making it harder for police by causing an increasing danger to the public of approaching or cooperating with law enforcement.

Curious, can you name a president that met your expectations in this area?

He didn't 'overstay a visa'.......he entered the US illegally and without a visa. That is a crime. Don't like the laws......call your Congressman. This hombre would have been legalized under the comprehensive immigration law proposed by 'W' back in 2007. Unfortunately, all the liberal leftists encouraged their little brown pets to march in the streets of LA, Chicago, New York etc on May Day carrying flags.......Mexican flags. Looked like an invasion......pissed off the hard working middle class.....and killed the bill.......can't fix stupid.....

Yes, there are those who think there is a line.

    But, there is no line.

What we have is multiple programs that have different requirements - for family members, for those with special skills we need more of, etc.

If you don't have special qualifications to meet other programs, you're probably left with the "Diversity" program, which is run as a new lottery each year and has limited numbers allocated by country of origin.

I don't know what the numbers are today, but for a very long time, the "Diversity Program" allocation for Mexico (in fact, for the continents of N and S America) was ZERO.

Under Reagan we gave amnesty to those who had been here for some specific period of time.

That is consistent with our very American belief in amnesty for ALL crimes, misdemeanors and even debt (except for some levels of murder)

Today we need to stop having a two tiered labor market, where citizens can't compete with the cheap, discardable and unrepresented labor.

And, we can't afford to have this many people for whom it is illegal to work to pay their own way.

And, we can't afford to have a significant sub population that must avoid all contact with law enforcement and is unable to safely support law enforcement.

OK, he was born in Queens, just like Donald Trump. He does have some connections to some respected and well-known Hispanic Advocacy groups, like La Raza. Are we all going to have to vet everything ethnically in Trump's New America? If I'm a member of the Sons of Ireland does that mean I must recuse myself in any case involving Englishmen?

That is one fact that has been swept under the rug in many of these discussions.

For the majority of s.a. there is no line at all. It basically says do not enter with the lottery exceptions only.

Hence the reason we have so many that have slipped under the barricade and took a shortcut, the legal path is for the most part blocked.

I would have said Reagan as well, there may be others before him but that's who I remember.

However I'd need to actually look into whether he did it out of goodness of heart or for political gain.

Over a million real immigrants seem to find the legal 'line' each year. So you're saying that if someone doesn't like a law because it doesn't suit their timetable.......then just ignore it.........good stuff

no I didn't suggest that its the right thing to do, I just pointed out the fact that its done and the limits are one of the reasons why, you confirmed it. we're on the same page.

Trust me i'm anti illegal immigration and oddly enough it was my neighbor who is a mexican legal immigrant that convinced me to be so steadfast against it. The process was long and tedious but he's a proud american, and a Trump supporter.

Interesting enough my wife has a co-worker that she's worked side by side with for over 10 years now, she's a south american citizen that immigrated here at age 5, has 2 kids and a home here, been on a green card 4ever but its expiring soon. (i'm not that familiar with how the whole GC thing works, we never even knew she wasn't a citizen) She's been going through the citizenship process for some time now and is on the bubble. The difference (if there is one) is that her father feels terrible that he didn't start the process decades ago and both her and him take full responsibility for being lax in taking care of this because it would already have been done by now. ie: they accept the blame and hope that the US will accept her because she literally has no where to go if she was sent back no relatives, job, nothing.

So to put a human element into it, since I know this person very well and the circumstances, its hard to not by extremely sympathetic to her situation and we all hope it turns out well, but its a little dicey right now. So as much as I'm against illegal immigration I strongly support someone like this (and maybe the coffee guy?) who has been "legal" for a long time but never took the last step and is in danger of being sent back to the abyss. I consider that quite different than someone who just snuck in the back door and hid in the shadows.

This is hilarious. He's had two removal orders, both occurred under Obamas watch. It's taken till now for him to leave, and it's Trumps fault he has to leave? Wow. Just wow.

You forgot to also mention the two DUIs that all of the leftist media articles conveniently omit when painting the picture of poor little 'Juan Valdez' being kicked from the country by the boot of Trump. He's got a U.S. citizen wife, so they will finish up his immigrant visa processing.......get an immigrant visa in Ciudad Juarez........and be back in less than a year..........

I didn't forget them, but yup he had those two.

The citizen wife is what I really don't get. He was married to her for several years(didn't even tell her he was an illegal, she found out when they were stopped at the Canadian border), and didn't try to get citizenship for years after they were married.

I know it's a bit easier and faster when you're married to a citizen, so I don't understand why a successful coffee grower wouldn't get his citizenship via that relatively quickly when he can apparently afford it.

The whole 'getting stopped at the Canadian border' issue I haven't seen. Can you post a link to that article? If that's the case then he probably has what's called a 'permanent ten year bar', which means he can't immigrate based on his wife's petition for ten years. It's a pretty harsh provision in the immigration code........but, once again, if you don't like the law.......call your friggin' Congressperson. Not to mention, why would someone here illegally choose to cross borders and go to Canada? You can't fix 'stupid' by going to the 9th Circuit and whining about your mistakes....

Let me see if I can find it, it was in article in a previous thread on this guy. I think it was this guy, anyways, but could be a different one. Google just wants to give me this good hombre crap. I did find this searching through articles:

By law, he will be barred from returning to the U.S. for 10 years after deportation, Reinhardt noted.

Yeah......I think you are thinking about the Indiana case which made the news about a month ago........similar fact pattern (married to a USC, owned a restaurant) but he and his wife had gone to Niagra Falls, crossed into Canada and got apprehended coming back. That quote from the judge does indicate that this hombre has a ten year permanent bar as well.

I did have him mixed up with the Indiana guy. I can see why, eerily similar stories.

Edit: I knew I had posted in the thread so I had to go through my posts. Took a bit lol

That's what had been going on for decades.

The changes Obama introduced cause the current situation where the numbers are not growing - the first time in decades that could be said.

NOW, Trump is moving us back to the old plan that did not work.

I don't see goodness of heart or political gain as the issue.

When we give amnesty to those who commit criminal acts it isn't due to either of those two objectives.

Every state has such amnesty in the for of statutes of limitation for just about every crime on the books as well as for debt. I don't believe that's out of goodness of heart or political gain.

    We have some real problems.

The guy in the OP is NOT a real problem. In fact, he's an asset.

Spending our taxes on deporting successful businessmen with multiple strong family ties here after years of his proven success is just plain STUPID.

If his crime had been third degree murder we would not prosecute him.

If his crime had been assault with a deadly weapon, distributing drugs, running a prostitution ring, we would not prosecute him.

Yet, we're working to break up his family, end his business, and send him to some other country where he has no job or home???

And, YOU think that makes sense???

Are you this upset at fathers, or mothers being sent to prison?

He's a two time DUI guy. He's not exactly a perfect model citizen.

The only money we are spending in the OP case is money to break up the family, end the successful business (and the jobs and taxes it creates), and send a guy to a country where he has no job or home.

THAT is what we're spending our money on.

It's not "sanctimonious" to point out how stupid and immoral that is.

We don't send people to prison for what happened years ago. We have statutes for amnesty for almost every crime and misdemeanor on the books in every state of our union. We even have such statutes for debt.

And, when we successfully prosecute before such statutes take affect and send people to prison, it's for a specified period of time upon which they are released.

I'm appalled at how lenient we are on DUI. But, that is a separate issue.

So where is your cut-off for letting illegal aliens stay after committing the crime of entering illegally? Is 2 years enough or would you make the cut-off 4 years.......one kid born here or two or three? If two DUIs is not enough to disqualify the illegal from staying......how about four. What if they severely injured or killed someone in a DUI? See how this game works.? With any law you have to set parameters......and folks are going to have to end up in one side or another. This dude filed for 'cancellation' of removal under Obama which requires ten years. Obamas Immigration Judge didn't feel that his equities outweighed the illegal entry and two DUIs and ordered him removed. The Trump administration is now enforcing the Obama administrations order.......

They are being held to the standard as every who broke the law by coming here illegally. And that is deportation.
